Core microbiota drive functional stability of soil microbiome in reforestation ecosystems

Shuo Jiao et al.

Summary: This study found that core microbiota are crucial for maintaining the functional stability of soil microbiomes, especially in restored ecosystems. Core taxa within soil networks with similar ecological preferences play a significant role in functional stability. Reforestation was shown to decrease functional stability in soil microbiomes, with variations seen along the vertical soil profile.

Biocrusts: Engineers and architects of surface soil properties, functions, and processes in dryland ecosystems

Bo Xiao et al.

Summary: Biocrusts are photosynthetic biotic communities that aggregate minerals at the soil surface in harsh environments. They play important ecological roles in modifying soil properties and regulating functions. This collection of research articles highlights the significance of biocrusts in reshaping soil properties and multifunctionality, as well as the impact of global change factors on biocrust-soil systems.

Warming-driven migration of core microbiota indicates soil property changes at continental scale

Shang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a continental-scale analysis of forest soil samples showed potential northward migration of core microbiota under global warming conditions. The species preferring low pH and low soil organic carbon are projected to expand at middle to high latitudes, while those favoring high annual mean temperature are likely to increase at high latitudes, indicating differential responses to temperature variation in colder areas. This has significant ecological implications for future warming scenarios.

Defining and quantifying the core microbiome: Challenges and prospects

Alexander T. Neu et al.

Summary: The term core microbiome refers to a set of microbial taxa or attributes associated with those taxa that are characteristic of a host or environment, with little consensus on how it should be quantified in practice. Various metrics have been used, but many are susceptible to biases, highlighting the need for standardized metrics for studying core microbiomes.

Meadow degradation increases spatial turnover rates of the fungal community through both niche selection and dispersal limitation

Yingcheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the spatial turnover rates of soil prokaryotic and fungal communities in degraded and undegraded alpine meadows, revealing the influence of soil and vegetation factors on the diversity of fungal community, as well as the changes in the community assembly mechanism during meadow degradation. The results showed that both environmental selection and dispersal limitation play important roles in shaping the fungal community structure under degradation, with dispersal limitation becoming more prominent as distance increases. This study provides new insights into soil microbial responses to vegetation changes in alpine areas.

Grazing intensity induced alternations of soil microbial community composition in aggregates drive soil organic carbon turnover in a desert steppe

Jianling Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, the impacts of different grazing intensity on soil microbial community diversity and composition in a long-term enclosed grazing desert steppe were examined. The results showed that 15 years of grazing significantly increased the soil organic carbon content. Microbial communities were influenced by grazing intensity and aggregate fractions, with proper grazing being identified as a key factor for maintaining the long-term sustainability of the desert steppe ecosystem.

Grazing accelerates labile and recalcitrant soil carbon loss driving by rare microbial taxa in a desert steppe

Jianling Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term grazing in desert steppe did not significantly reduce total SOC, but significantly decreased labile and recalcitrant SOC fractions under high grazing intensity. Additionally, soil prokaryotic communities were not significantly impacted by grazing intensity, but sensitive OTUs were found to cluster in modules reflecting different grazing intensities, indicating a response to grazing. Association networks of prokaryotic OTUs and organic C fractions highlighted the significance of rare microbial taxa in relation to SOC fractions, suggesting that grazing intensity can act as environmental filtering and affect soil microbial diversity and SOC fractions.

Distinct Functions and Assembly Mechanisms of Soil Abundant and Rare Bacterial Taxa Under Increasing Pyrene Stresses

Yuzhu Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon stress on soil bacterial communities, specifically the abundant and rare subcommunities. The results show that as stress increases, diversity increases in the abundant subcommunities while decreasing in the rare subcommunities. Abundant taxa play a key role in pyrene biodegradation, while rare taxa contribute to improving subcommunity resistance to stress.
