Cryptogenic hepatocellular carcinoma: characteristics, outcome, and prognostic role of albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade vs easy ALBI grade

Shu-Yein Ho et al.

Summary: Patients with cryptogenic HCC have larger tumor burden and advanced cancer stage at disease presentation compared to those with viral HCC. ALBI and EZ-ALBI scores are robust models to evaluate liver functional reserve for these patients independent of treatment modality.

Predicting Post-hepatectomy Liver Failure Preoperatively for Child-Pugh A5 Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients by Liver Stiffness

Jiayao Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the ability of liver stiffness measured by two-dimensional shear wave elastography to predict post-hepatectomy liver failure in hepatocellular carcinoma patients with a Child-Pugh score of 5. The analysis revealed that a minimum liver stiffness higher than 8.05 and the future liver remnant / estimated total liver volume were independent predictors of post-hepatectomy liver failure in these patients. The model based on these predictors showed good ability in predicting post-hepatectomy liver failure in both the training and validation groups, with an AUC of 0.78 and 0.76, respectively.

Post-hepatectomy liver failure after hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma: a single center experience

Ahmed Shehta et al.

Summary: The study found that Egyptian patients with HCC are more likely to experience post-hepatectomy liver failure after liver resection, which significantly impacts the long-term survival of the patients. Important predictors of post-hepatectomy liver failure after liver resection include preoperative albumin, bilirubin, international normalized ratio, and liver cirrhosis.

Post hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) - Recent advances in prevention and clinical management

Jon Arne Soreide et al.

Summary: Posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a rare but serious complication following liver surgery, with major risk factors including underlying liver disease, extent of resection, and intraoperative course. The majority of mortality associated with PHLF is related to sepsis, organ failure, and cerebral events. There has been little progress in definitive and specific management of liver failure.

A novel online calculator based on noninvasive markers (ALBI and APRI) for predicting post-hepatectomy liver failure in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Jin-Yu Shi et al.

Summary: ALBI and APRI showed more accurate predictive ability for PHLF compared to Child-Pugh and MELD. The proposed predictive models and online calculators combining ALBI and APRI were useful tools for individually predicting the occurrence of PHLF among patients with HCC.

Combined APRI/ALBI score to predict mortality after hepatic resection

P. Starlinger et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of APRI/ALBI scores can accurately and reliably identify patients at highest risk of postoperative death, potentially improving preoperative risk assessment. The research also demonstrated that the combined use of these two scores is superior to using them individually in predicting 30-day mortality after surgery.
