Degradation of toluene by tube-tube coaxial dielectric barrier discharge: power characteristics and power factor optimization

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the power characteristics and power factor optimization in a coaxial tube-tube dielectric barrier discharge reactor. The effects of various parameters on discharge power and power factor were evaluated. The results show that increasing discharge voltage, discharge frequency, and electrode length can enhance discharge power. However, the power factor initially increases and then decreases with increasing discharge frequency. Response surface method and artificial neural network were used for power factor optimization, and their results were consistent. The degradation experiment of toluene in the reactor reveals a positive correlation between the toluene degradation rate and power factor, with discharge voltage, gas flow rate, and initial concentration playing key roles. The importance of these parameters is demonstrated when the power factor reaches 0.34 and the toluene degradation rate reaches 74.3% at a discharge voltage of 10 kV, gas flow rate of 70 mL/min, and initial concentration of 50 ppm.

Influence of Controlling Plasma Gas Species and Temperature on Reactive Species and Bactericidal Effect of the Plasma

Yuma Suenaga et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen plasma produced a higher concentration of OH radicals, while the concentration of singlet oxygen in carbon dioxide plasma increased with gas temperature. The bactericidal ability of carbon dioxide plasma increased with gas temperature, while nitrogen plasma did not exhibit a high bactericidal effect.

Plasma Gas Temperature Control Performance of Metal 3D-Printed Multi-Gas Temperature-Controllable Plasma Jet

Yuma Suenaga et al.

Summary: The study designed and built a multi-gas temperature-controllable plasma jet, which was able to control the gas temperature of plasmas with different gas species. Computational fluid dynamics analysis was used to evaluate the temperature control performance of nitrogen gas, and the fabricated plasma jet body successfully linearly controlled gas temperature for all plasma gas species. This is expected to expand the application range of atmospheric low temperature plasma and improve the plasma treatment effect.

Atmospheric Pressure Tornado Plasma Jet of Polydopamine Coating on Graphite Felt for Improving Electrochemical Performance in Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Song-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Commercial graphite felt (GF) is used as electrodes and coated with a polydopamine catalyst to enhance the electrocatalytic activity for the redox reaction of vanadium ions in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Through a facile coating using atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ), the surface superhydrophilicity is altered and more active sites are provided on the modified electrodes, leading to improved electrochemical performance. The technique of APPJ coating offers oxygen-containing functional groups on the substrate surface for hydrogen bonding with grafted polymeric materials.

M. Y. Song et al.

Summary: This study conducted VOC measurements at an auto-repair painting facility in Korea, identifying butyl acetate as the main VOC compound with different characteristics depending on the type of paint used. Additionally, it was observed that most VOC concentrations decreased after passing through adsorption systems, although high concentrations were found at the outlets in some workshops.

Removal of toluene as a toxic VOC from methane gas using a non-thermal plasma dielectric barrier discharge reactor

Faisal Saleem et al.

Summary: This study focused on the removal of toxic compound (toluene) from methane gas using a dielectric barrier discharge reactor, with maximum removal efficiency of 85.9% achieved at 40W and 2.86s. The major gaseous products were H-2 and lower hydrocarbons, with their yield increasing with input power, indicating decomposition of toxic compounds and methane for production.

Volatile organic compound emissions from solvent- and water-borne coatings - compositional differences and tracer compound identifications

Chelsea E. Stockwell et al.

Summary: The emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from volatile chemical products (VCPs) are emerging as the largest source of petroleum-derived organic carbon in US cities, with a focus on personal care products, cleaning agents, coatings, adhesives, and pesticides. Experimental results show diverse emissions of volatile chemical products, while VOCs from solvent- and water-borne coatings are mainly driven by industrial usage patterns.
