Concordance assessment through comparison with urine cotinine: Does self-report adequately reflect passive smoking?

Myung-Bae Park

Summary: This study aimed to compare self-report and biomarkers for assessing passive smoking and found that self-report method is more likely to classify passive smokers into the non-exposed group. Therefore, to accurately assess exposure in various settings, biomonitoring and self-report should be used simultaneously.

Status and correlates of children?s exposure to secondhand smoke at home: A survey in Chongqing, China

Longxian Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the status and influencing factors of child exposure to secondhand smoke in households with smokers. The questionnaire data showed that 46.9% of families had smokers in their household, with smoking occurring in the presence of children in 80.7% of these families. Factors such as the time of first cigarette in the morning, changes in smoking habits, attitudes towards tobacco control, self-efficacy in maintaining a smoke-free home, having rules for smoke-free homes, and providing cigarettes to guests were associated with exposure to secondhand smoke.

Thirdhand smoke from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, methamphetamine and cocaine: Partitioning, reactive fate, and human exposure in indoor environments

Kristen Yeh et al.

Summary: Thirdhand smoke (THS) refers to the contamination that remains indoors after smoking. This study reviews the composition and behavior of different types of indoor THS, including from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, and illicit substances. Modeling results suggest that volatile compounds are inhaled, while water-soluble compounds are absorbed by the skin.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis study support a causal association between SHS exposure and oral cancer. Individuals exposed to SHS, particularly for more than 10 or 15 years, have an increased risk of developing oral cancer. These findings could inform public health professionals, researchers, and policymakers in implementing effective SHS exposure prevention programs globally.

Content of toxic components of cigarette, cigarette smoke vs cigarette butts: A comprehensive systematic review

Farshid Soleimani et al.

Summary: Commercially sold cigarettes contain over 7000 chemicals, producing various potential toxicants during combustion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other aromatic hydrocarbons are major components, while metals and nitrosamines are found in higher concentrations in sidestream smoke. Tobacco toxicants are inhaled by smokers and transmitted to the environment through secondhand smoke, thirdhand smoke, and discarded cigarette butts.

Addressing uncertainty in mouthing-mediated ingestion of chemicals on indoor surfaces, objects, and dust

Li Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new modeling approach for investigating the mouthing-mediated ingestion of chemicals in indoor environments. The model takes into account indoor dynamics of dust and chemicals, and shows that low-volatility chemicals are more efficiently enriched in hand skin, leading to higher mouthing-mediated ingestion. The model also predicts that factors such as cleaning frequency and dustiness of indoor surfaces can affect the transfer of chemicals to hands and mouth.

Females with depressive symptoms had significantly higher UCo concentrations compared to females without depressive symptoms. The cross-sectional design of the study means that only an association, not causal effects, can be inferred between SHS exposure and depression.

Exposure to secondhand smoke is associated with increased left ventricular mass

Travis M. Skipina et al.

Summary: Chronic hypertension is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy, and recent evidence suggests that secondhand smoke exposure is also related to chronic hypertension. This study found that exposure to secondhand smoke is associated with increased left ventricular mass index among non-smokers, with a dose-response relationship between level of exposure and left ventricular mass index. These results were consistent across different subgroups, reinforcing the harmful effects of passive smoking on the cardiovascular system.
