Engineered biomaterials to guide spheroid formation, function, and fabrication into 3D tissue constructs

Nikolas Di Caprio et al.

Summary: Cellular spheroids are being explored as building blocks for tissue engineering and as tissue models. Biomaterials are being used to guide spheroid formation and function, and also facilitate the fabrication of tissue constructs. This review provides an overview of recent studies on the role of engineered biomaterials in supporting spheroids in biomedical applications.

Formulation and evaluation of quince seeds mucilage - sodium alginate microspheres for sustained delivery of cefixime and its toxicological studies

Shazia Akram Ghumman et al.

Summary: Quince seed mucilage combined with sodium alginate was used to develop sustained-release microspheres of cefixime. The physical characterizations showed that the microspheres had maximum swelling at pH 7.4 and reduced swelling at acidic pH. The microspheres exhibited small average particle size and high drug encapsulation efficiency. The in vitro release of the microspheres followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, indicating sustained release of cefixime and improved antibacterial properties.

Surface free energy and wettability properties of transparent conducting oxide-based films with Ag interlayer

Salih Ozbay et al.

Summary: ITO, ZTO, AZO, and Ag are commonly used in multilayer thin films of transparent conducting oxide (TCO)/metal/TCO electrodes, with critical knowledge of surface free energy (SFE) being important for designing desirable TCO-based sandwich structures. Contact angle measurements of different liquids were used to evaluate the wettability properties of TCO, Ag interlayer, and TCO/Ag/TCO. The results showed that the SFE components varied depending on the TCO type, the total SFE values of TCO/Ag/TCO films were lower than TCO films, and AZO/Ag adhesion was stronger than other TCO/Ag structures.

From a plant secretion to the promising bone grafts: Cryogels of silicon-integrated quince seed mucilage by microwave-assisted sol-gel reaction

Hilal Deniz Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The design and fabrication of biologically active cryogels using novel biopolymer(s) for regenerating bone defects are still important. In this study, a 3D cryogel from silicon-integrated quince seed mucilage (QSM) was constructed and characterized. Results showed that the silica-modified QSM cryogels exhibited stronger and earlier osteogenic capacity, indicating great potential for bone tissue engineering applications.
