Molecular Identification of Parasites Causing Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Panama

Aracelis del C. Miranda et al.

Summary: The predominant species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama is Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis, with other species circulating to a lesser degree. The presence of genetic variants and hybrid isolates suggests implications for the epidemiology and clinical follow-up of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. No evidence of parasites from the Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana complex was found in this study in Panama.
