Spectroscopic Manifestations and Implications for Catalysis of Quasi-d10 Configurations in Formal Gold(III) Complexes

Evgeniya A. Trifonova et al.

Summary: This study investigates different valence states complexes of gold and focuses on the d-configuration and oxidation state of the metal center. It reveals that the bonding of gold(III) is similar to that of copper(III), and the genuine d(10) configuration is not achieved. The sigma bonds in Au(I) species have an increased electron-sharing nature compared to Ag(I) and Cu(I) due to the low-lying 6s orbital. These findings explain why Au(I) and Au(III) complexes often exhibit similar reactivity.

Combining Valence-to-Core X-ray Emission and Cu K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopies to Experimentally Assess Oxidation State in Organometallic Cu(I)/(II)/(III) Complexes

Blaise L. Geoghegan et al.

Summary: A combination of Cu K-edge X-ray absorption and Cu K beta valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopies can be used to characterize the formal oxidation states of organometallic copper complexes. These methods are crucial for investigating the electronic structures of highly covalent copper complexes.

Bonding and the role of electrostatics in driving C-C bond formation in high valent organocopper compounds

Jason Shearer et al.

Summary: The electronic structures and reactivity of [Cu(CF3)(4)](-) and [Cu(CF3)(3)(CH3)](-) were studied, revealing that the Cu-C bonds in these complexes are charge shift bonds. It was found that electrostatics likely hinder the formation of a productive transition state for C-C bond formation in [Cu(CF3)(4)](-), while promoting one in [Cu(CF3)(3)(CH3)](-). These findings provide important design criteria for Cu-mediated C-C/C-heteroatom bond formation.

Reversible Glutamate Coordination to High-Valent Nickel Protects the Active Site of a [NiFe] Hydrogenase from Oxygen

Catharina J. Kulka-Peschke et al.

Summary: The NAD(+)-reducing [NiFe] hydrogenase from Hydrogenophilus thermoluteolus shows promising potential for biotechnological applications due to its O2 tolerance and thermostability. Through studying the active-site structure and catalytic activity of native HtSH and its variants, it was revealed that oxidized HtSH features unusual active-site states with unique responses to O2, potentially serving as a mechanism to protect the enzyme from oxidative damage.
