High-entropy alloy stabilized active Ir for highly efficient acidic oxygen evolution

Han Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a breakthrough in using high-entropy alloy (HEA) as substrates to stabilize active Ir at the nanoscale was reported. Fe, Co, Ni, and Ru were used as stabilizing structural elements. The FeCoNiIrRu HEA nanoparticles were synthesized in electrospun carbon nano-fibers (CNFs) and exhibited thermodynamic induced phase evolution. The FeCoNiIrRu/CNFs showed excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotential and high mass activity. The hysteretic diffusion effect of HEA inhibited metal leaching and dissolution, leading to excellent durability. The OER performance could be optimized by changing metal compositions and calcination temperatures. In situ Raman spectra revealed the formation of intermediates on HEA NP surfaces. The redistribution of electron density in FeCoNiIrRu NPs promoted the conversion of *OOH and generation of O-2.

Summary: This article presents a synthesis method for single-layer NiFeB hydroxide nanosheets and demonstrates the effectiveness of electron-deficient boron in promoting the formation of high-oxidation-state Ni for improved oxygen evolution activity. Experimental results show that the incorporation of boron into a NiFe hydroxide can cause a cathodic shift of the Ni2+(OH)(2) -> Ni3+delta OOH transition potential and reduce the energy barriers for the reaction. As a result, the catalyst achieves a current density of 100 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH and is among the best Ni-based catalysts for this reaction.

Operando identification of active sites in Co-Cr oxyhydroxide oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

Lei Tang et al.

Summary: This study identifies the reason for a 12-fold enhancement in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity by confining high-valence chromium into the lattice of pure cobalt oxyhydroxide. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the formation of high-valence chromium with shortened Cr-O bond on the OER active site. Electrochemical impedance and infrared spectroscopy provide direct evidence of OOH* on the chromium site. The confined chromium is identified as the active site with improved bonding strength with O*, resulting in a lower overpotential than that on the cobalt site. This research elucidates the dynamic behavior of active sites and provides guidance for improving OER catalysts by introducing high-valence metals.
