Disease burden of migraine and tension-type headache in non-high-income East and Southeast Asia from 1990 to 2019

Rongguang Ge et al.

Summary: The study aims to analyze and describe the current status and changing trends of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) in non-high-income East and Southeast Asia. The findings show that these regions have a large number of patients, causing significant burdens on both patients and caregivers. The highest age-standardized YLD rate for migraine is found in Thailand, while the highest rate for TTH is found in Indonesia. The main population affected by migraine and TTH are individuals between the ages of 40 and 44, especially females. However, there is no significant association observed between headache burden and socioeconomic background.

Global, regional, and national burden of migraine in 204 countries and territories, 1990 to 2019

Saeid Safiri et al.

Summary: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 revealed an increase in the burden of migraine from 1990 to 2019, with significant intercountry differences. Migraine prevalence was higher in females and decreased with age after the 40 to 44 age group. Enhanced migraine care is necessary to increase awareness of risk factors and treatment strategies, particularly among young adults and middle-aged women, as well as to gather more data on migraines.

The prevalence and impact of migraine and severe headache in the United States: Updated age, sex, and socioeconomic-specific estimates from government health surveys

Rebecca Burch et al.

Summary: Accurate estimates of the burden of migraine and severe headache are crucial for evidence-based decision-making about workforce needs and health resource distribution. The prevalence of migraine in the US has remained stable, with a higher impact in women of childbearing age and those of lower socioeconomic status. Many adults with migraine or severe headaches are disadvantaged, highlighting the need for improved funding for treatment provision and research to reduce the future burden of disease.

Structured Q1 headache services as the solution to the ill-health burden of headache: 1. Rationale and description

Timothy J. Steiner et al.

Summary: The current focus of headache services in most countries is on specialist care, when in fact, most headache disorders could be effectively treated in educationally supported primary care. The high demand for headache care is the biggest challenge to reform, and placing headache services in primary care with educational support can effectively address this issue. The structured headache services model presented by experts is adaptable and cost-effective, but requires further formal economic analysis to validate its efficiency.
