Recent developments in photocatalysis of industrial effluents : A review and example of phenolic compounds degradation

Mahsa Motamedi et al.

Summary: Industrial expansion and increased water consumption have led to water scarcity issues, while conventional wastewater purification methods are not efficient in degrading stubborn pollutants. This review paper discusses recent advances and challenges in using photocatalytic processes for treating industrial effluents, particularly in degrading phenolic compounds. Key operational parameters, such as catalyst loading, light intensity, initial pollutant concentration, pH, and types and concentrations of oxidants, are evaluated and discussed. Among these parameters, pH has the greatest effect on the photo-oxidation of contaminants due to the photocatalyst's ionization degree and surface charge. The review also presents major phenolic compounds and explores the applicability and barriers of photocatalytic processes in practical applications, including high energy demand, technical challenges, catalyst stability, and recyclability. Energy consumption and operational costs for large-scale processes are also discussed. Finally, research gaps in this area and suggestions for improving degradation efficiencies in industrial applications are presented, including the proposal for selective degradation processes in untreated sewage.
