Lithium isotopic composition of soil pore water: Responses to evapotranspiration

Zhewen Xu et al.

Summary: Lithium isotopes have the potential to trace Earth surface processes. The study proposes an in situ mechanism involving evapotranspiration to explain the formation of high δLi-7 values and provides evidence from the Chinese Loess Plateau. The research suggests that the influence of evapotranspiration on riverine δLi-7 may partly explain the variations of seawater δLi-7.

Hydrological control of river and seawater lithium isotopes

Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: Seasonal changes in seawater lithium isotopes (ΔLi-7) were observed in Tibetan and Pamir rivers, with higher ΔLi-7 values during dry seasons compared to wet seasons. This global pattern is negatively correlated with annual runoff, suggesting a hydrological control on ΔLi-7 values. The study proposes that hydrological changes can affect river ΔLi-7 and calls for a reconsideration of its use in studying past weathering intensity and flux, offering a new approach to reconstruct hydrological conditions.

Multi-mode chemical exchange in seafloor alteration revealed by lithium and potassium isotopes

Heng-Ci Tian et al.

Summary: Elemental exchange during seafloor alteration has significant effects on the chemical compositions of seawater and oceanic crust, as well as global elemental cycling. This study investigates Li and K isotopic compositions in an altered pillow basalt from Mariana Trench, revealing large isotopic variations on a centimeter scale and providing evidence for multi-mode chemical exchange in oceanic basalts. This research enhances our understanding of seafloor alteration processes.

Reconstructing the lithium isotopic composition (d7Li) of seawater from shallow marine carbonate sediments

Jack G. Murphy et al.

Summary: The records of lithium isotopic composition in seawater preserved in shallow-marine carbonate sediments are valuable for studying the links between silicate weathering, clay formation, global carbon cycle, and Earth's climate over geological time. This study presents measurements of lithium isotopic composition in Neogene shallow-marine carbonates and demonstrates the effects of mineralogy and diagenetic alteration on the variability of bulk sediment δ Li-7 values. The findings suggest that robust 'snapshots' of seawater δ Li-7 values in the past can be obtained from shallow-water marine carbonate sediments.

Persistent late permian to early triassic warmth linked to enhanced reverse weathering

Cheng Cao et al.

Summary: In the Precambrian, reverse weathering played a key role in the carbon cycle, but marine silicifiers reduced its importance in the Phanerozoic. This study shows that an increase in reverse weathering rates led to a decline in seawater Li isotopes during the Late Permian and Early Triassic, explaining the failure of chemical weathering to decrease atmospheric CO2 levels during this period.

The effect of solution chemistry on elemental and isotopic fractionation of lithium during inorganic precipitation of calcite

M. Seyedali et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that the elemental and isotopic fractionation of lithium between inorganic calcite and aqueous solutions changes with increasing solution pH. The concentration of Li in calcite increases with decreasing pH due to Li incorporation into calcite as LiHCO3 and a dependence on solution H+/Ca2+. The relative diffusivity of Li-6 and Li-7 in solutions with different pH shows little or no difference across the range of solution chemistry considered.

Lithium isotopes and partition coefficients in inorganic carbonates: Proxy calibration for weathering reconstruction

Christopher C. Day et al.

Summary: The study reports Li measurements from cave-analogue carbonate-precipitation experiments to assess isotope fractionation factors applicable to speleothem growth and lithium incorporation in carbonates. The experimental setup mimics natural processes while allowing for controlled growth conditions. The results show a low sensitivity of isotope fractionation to in-cave growth conditions, which is encouraging for weathering intensity reconstruction using speleothem samples.

Lithium isotope evidence for enhanced weathering and erosion during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum

Philip A. E. Pogge von Strandmann et al.

Summary: During the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, there was a significant change in the global weathering system, as indicated by lithium isotopes in seawater and local rock weathering inputs, possibly due to a large delivery of clays to the oceans or a shift in the weathering regime. The increase in global erosion rates and modeled weathering growth supported enhanced carbon burial, stabilizing the climate during this period.
