Summary: The locus coeruleus (LC) plays a major role in regulating autonomic function, arousal, attention, and neuroinflammation. LC dysfunction, particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD), is associated with significant neuronal loss, while its relationship with aging-related neuronal loss is unclear. LC density may reflect cognitive reserve, and new imaging techniques are enhancing our understanding of LC in aging and AD.

The use of ME-fMRI data also provides significant improvements in temporal signal to noise ratio and DVARS compared to denoised single echo data (1E-fMRI).

Even under constant lighting, global arousal level and cognitive factors can influence pupil size. The pupillary response can be used to detect the impact of subcortical and cortical structures on the pupillary innervation system, making pupillometry a promising tool in clinical applications.
