Experimental and Theoretical Study of Dynamic Polarizabilities in the 5S1/2-5D5/2 Clock Transition in Rubidium-87 and Determination of Electric Dipole Matrix Elements

Rhona Hamilton et al.

Summary: The interaction between light and an atom causes perturbations in the atom's energy levels, leading to light shifts. These light shifts affect the accuracy and precision of atomic clocks. A study was conducted on the light shifts and dynamic polarizabilities of a two-photon atomic clock based on the 5S1/2-5D5/2 transition in rubidium-87. Experimental and theoretical values for a magic wavelength in the range of 770-800 nm and the electric dipole (E1) matrix element for the 5P3/2-5D5/2 transition were determined. The study resolved a previous discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Measurement of the hyperfine coupling constants and absolute energies of the 8p 2P1/2 and 8p 2P3/2 levels in atomic cesium

Jonah A. Quirk et al.

Summary: We report the measurements of the hyperfine coupling constant of the 8p 2P1/2 level of atomic cesium, 133Cs, with a relative uncertainty of & AP;0.019%. Our result, A = 42.933 (8) MHz, is in good agreement with recent theoretical results. We also examine the hyperfine structure of the 8p 2P3/2 level and derive new energy values for the 8p 2P1/2 and 8p 2P3/2 levels of cesium.

QED radiative corrections to electric dipole amplitudes in heavy atoms

C. J. Fairhall et al.

Summary: We investigate the quantum electrodynamics (QED) radiative corrections to electric dipole (E1) transition amplitudes in heavy alkali-metal atoms Rb, Cs, Fr, and alkali-metal-like ions Sr+, Ba+, and Ra+ using the radiative potential method. The accuracy of the method is tested by comparing with rigorous QED results in simple atomic potentials. Our study focuses on the effects of core relaxation, core polarization by the E1 field, and valence-core correlations on QED, which are found to be significant in certain cases. Several transitions are identified where the QED contribution exceeds the deviation between atomic theory and experiment.

Precision theoretical determination of electric-dipole matrix elements in atomic cesium

H. B. Tran Tan et al.

Summary: We used the ab initio relativistic coupled-cluster method to compute the reduced electric-dipole matrix elements in cesium for n = 6, 7 and n' = 6, 7, ... , 12. Our results agree with previous calculations but also reveal significant contributions from nonlinear singles and doubles as well as valence triples. We also calculated the normalized ratio xi(n, n') which is important for experimental determination of matrix elements, and observed large deviations from the nonrelativistic limit.

Summary: We report the first operation of a Ra+ optical clock, demonstrating its performance in terms of frequency stability and systematic uncertainty. The clock allows for the measurement of the ratio of Lande ' g-factors and can improve limits on the time variation of the fine structure constant in optical frequency comparisons. Additionally, the clock has features that make it suitable for portable optical clock applications.

Summary: We measured the lifetime of the radium ion's 7p(2)P(3/2) state and found it to be τ = 4.78(3) ns. The measured lifetime is consistent with theoretical calculations and will provide valuable information for determining the differential scalar polarizability of the narrow linewidth 7s S-2(1/2) -> (6)d(2)D(5/2) optical clock transition.

Measurement of the 87Rb D-line vector tune-out wavelength

A. J. Fallon et al.

Summary: In this study, a precision measurement of a tune-out wavelength for Rb-87 using circularly polarized light was reported. The total polarizability of the atom depends on both the scalar and vector polarizability components which makes the location of the tune-out wavelength sensitive to different combinations of atomic dipole matrix elements than the scalar polarizability alone. The observed tune-out wavelength of 785.1522 nm agrees with theoretical expectations when small contributions from core electrons and off-resonant valence states are considered.

Radiative transition properties of singly charged magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium ions

Mandeep Kaur et al.

Summary: This study calculates accurate values of electric dipole (E1) amplitudes and uncertainties for transitions among low-lying states of Mg+, Ca+, Sr+, and Ba+ ions, and provides transition probabilities, oscillator strengths, and lifetimes by combining experimental data. Additionally, electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) amplitudes for metastable states are also calculated, estimating corresponding transition probabilities and lifetimes. The results are compared with existing theoretical studies and experimental data, and are expected to be useful for astrophysical observations and simulations.

Hyperfine anomaly in heavy atoms and its role in precision atomic searches for new physics

Summary: Calculations of differential hyperfine anomalies were conducted on atoms and ions of interest in precision atomic tests of the standard model. The nuclear single-particle model showed better agreement with experimental data compared to the uniform ball model, advocating for its use in future studies of hyperfine structure. These results impact uncertainty analyses in atomic structure theory, crucial for interpreting precision atomic measurements, such as atomic parity violation in cesium.
