Sulfur modification of worm-like exfoliated graphite with crumpled graphene sheets derived from mesocarbon microbeads for electrochemical supercapacitors

Chung-Ting Tsai et al.

Summary: Chemical exfoliation and unzipping of graphitic mesocarbon microbeads can lead to the formation of bone-like aggregates of graphene oxide. Different treatments can result in partially reduced GO fragments with hydrophobic sheets or sulfur-doped and reduced GO with a worm-like shape. The sulfur-doped GO exhibits enhanced charge-storage properties due to its high hydrophilicity, electrical conductivity, and unique worm-like configuration. It has higher pseudocapacitive charge-storage capacity and better rate performance compared to the other two types of electrodes.

Crumpled graphene oxide for enhanced room temperature gas sensing: understanding the critical roles of surface morphology and functionalization

Kelsey Haddad et al.

Summary: This work explores the morphology and functionality of graphene oxide in relation to room temperature gas sensing performance. It synthesizes highly-oxidized, crumpled graphene oxide (HO-CGO) and compares it to thermally reduced flat graphene oxide. The results show that HO-CGO exhibits the strongest response to ethanol after one hour of reduction at a mild temperature, while flat graphene oxide shows no response. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that structural valleys in CGO act as stable sites for oxygen defects and preferential binding sites for ethanol molecules, which results in enhanced sensing response.
