Fluid transients in viscoelastic pipes via an internal variable constitutive theory

Douglas Monteiro Andrade et al.

Summary: This work presents a fluid transient model that incorporates the viscoelastic behavior of pipes. The model accurately calculates the rates of energy dissipation in the fluid and pipe separately, allowing for a better understanding of the phenomenon and potential applications in theoretical and applied research.

A thermodynamically consistent model for hydraulic transients in metallic pipes undergoing elasto-viscoplastic deformations

Douglas Monteiro Andrade et al.

Summary: This study extends the fluid transient analysis to incorporate the elasto-viscoplastic behavior of pipe material. A previously developed quasi-2D flow model serves as the basis, and the elasto-viscoplastic behavior is added using constitutive equations formulated through an internal variables theory. The resulting governing equations are solved using the method of characteristics and the Newton-Raphson method. The model is thermodynamically consistent and is found to accurately simulate hydraulic transients in metallic materials experiencing plastic deformation. The inclusion of elasto-viscoplasticity leads to increased attenuation and dispersion of pressure responses, which can be better understood through the relationship between viscoplastic mechanisms and energy dissipation. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of accurately describing fluid friction for realistic portrayal of fluid transient responses.
