Transition metal-free synthesis of 2-aryl quinazolines via alcohol dehydrogenation

P. Hima et al.

Summary: A transition metal-free synthesis of quinazoline derivatives from 2-aminobenzyl alcohols and aryl amides using a potassium tertiary butoxide-promoted alcohol dehydrogenation strategy is reported. Control experiments were conducted to identify reaction intermediates and the role of the K+ ion. DFT calculations uncovered the reaction mechanism, focusing on the rate-determining state. This method tolerates various functional groups, providing easy access to diversely substituted quinazolines.

Metal-free carbocatalyst for room temperature acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles

Haitao Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a metal-free carbocatalyst, nitrogen-assembly carbons (NCs), for acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles even at ambient temperature, showing greater activity than transition metal-based catalysts. The unique structure of NCs allows them to work without any H-acceptor and exhibit great potential for completing the cycle of hydrogen storage.

Reusable Single Homogeneous Ir(III)-NHC Catalysts for Bidirectional Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation of N-Heteroarenes in Water

Babulal Maji et al.

Summary: Bidirectional hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (BHD) catalysis is crucial for hydrogen storage and reutilization. Current systems for storing and extracting H-2 gas are limited, and single catalysts that can perform both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in water are rare. This study presents a water-soluble homogeneous iridium catalyst that efficiently performs bidirectional hydrogenation-dehydrogenation of quinoxaline and quinoline-based heterocycles under mild conditions. The catalyst can be reused and maintains high activity even after 40 days.

Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers and alternatives for international transport of renewable hydrogen

M. Niermann et al.

Summary: Hydrogen can be transported over long distances using Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC), which involves storing hydrogen in LOHC molecules and releasing it as needed. Different hydrogen transport options have varying energy consumption and costs, with LOHC favored for long-distance transport and pipelines preferred for shorter distances. Factors such as heat supply method and specific characteristics of different LOHCs need to be considered in determining the most cost-effective transport solution.

Bioinspired Atomic Manganese Site Accelerates Oxo-Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles over a Conjugated Tri-s-Triazine Framework

Zhou Zhang et al.

Summary: Drawing inspiration from metalloenzymes, a bioinspired photocatalyst with atomically dispersed manganese sites anchored onto conjugated tri-s-triazine units of graphitic carbon nitride was constructed for the oxo-dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles. The catalyst exhibited impressive activity and selectivity towards a broad scope of N-heterocycles in an air atmosphere, highlighting the potential of engineering metal active sites and the local environment for fine chemicals synthesis.

An effective strategy for hydrogen supply: catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles

Yujing Zhang et al.

Summary: The growing demand for new energy supply systems worldwide due to mobile applications has led to increased interest in effective hydrogen supply strategies. N-Heterocycles have shown potential for hydrogen storage and release, making catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation a promising pathway for improving hydrogen storage, transportation, and distribution. However, challenges such as harsh catalytic conditions and unstable catalysts have hindered research on decentralized pure hydrogen supply based on N-heterocycles dehydrogenation. Efforts are needed to explore simple, efficient, stable, controllable, green catalytic systems for this transformation.
