Association between the quality of plant-based diets and periodontitis in the US general population

An Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plant-based diet indices (PDIs) and periodontitis and serum IgG antibodies against periodontopathogens in the US population. The results showed that a healthy plant-based diet was associated with a reduced risk of periodontitis and higher antibody levels, while an unhealthy plant-based diet was associated with an increased risk of periodontitis and lower antibody levels.

Healthy lifestyles are associated with a better response to periodontal therapy: A prospective cohort study

Crystal Marruganti et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between lifestyle behaviors and clinical periodontal outcomes after Steps 1/2 of periodontal therapy. 120 subjects with untreated Stage II/III periodontitis participated in the study. The results showed that poor sleep quality, smoking, and excessive alcohol use were associated with a lower chance of achieving the endpoint of therapy. In addition, subjects with unhealthy lifestyles had higher proportions of residual deep periodontal pockets and lower odds of achieving the endpoint of therapy at re-evaluation.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between single nutrient intakes and nutrient-based dietary patterns with the risk of periodontal disease. The results showed that a dietary pattern characterized by high intake of vitamins and minerals was associated with a reduced risk of periodontal disease.

Adherence to Mediterranean diet, physical activity level, and severity of periodontitis: Results from a university-based cross-sectional study

Crystal Marruganti et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between adherence to Mediterranean diet and physical activity level on the periodontal status of a University-based cohort. The results showed that individuals with low adherence to Mediterranean diet and low physical activity level had 10 times the odds of having severe periodontitis compared to individuals with normal lifestyle habits.

Investigating oral and systemic pathways between unhealthy and healthy dietary patterns to periodontitis in adolescents: A population-based study

Susilena Arouche Costa et al.

Summary: This study found that both unhealthy and healthy dietary patterns in adolescents may contribute to the extent and severity of periodontitis through local and systemic mechanisms. Healthy diet was associated with reduced risk of periodontitis, while unhealthy diet was associated with increased risk.

How to Measure Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet in Dental Studies: Is a Short Adherence Screener Enough? A Comparative Analysis

Valentin Bartha et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the application of the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) in a study of the anti-inflammatory effect of a Mediterranean diet intervention on periodontal parameters. The results showed that the MEDAS score was negatively correlated with periodontal inflammation and positively correlated with certain nutrient intakes. The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and 24-hour dietary recall (24dr) produced comparable results for most nutrients.

Association between Healthy Lifestyle (Diet Quality, Physical Activity, Normal Body Weight) and Periodontal Diseases in Korean Adults

Su-Yeon Hwang et al.

Summary: This study found an association between healthy lifestyle and periodontal diseases in Korean adults. Each practice of healthy lifestyle, including diet quality, physical activity, and normal body weight, was significantly associated with periodontal diseases. Poor healthy lifestyle practices were identified as a risk factor for periodontal diseases. Therefore, improving healthy lifestyle should be emphasized in addition to oral hygiene for patients with periodontal diseases.

Changes in serum omega fatty acids on a Mediterranean diet intervention in patients with gingivitis: An exploratory study

Valentin Bartha et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between serum PUFA levels, specific food intake, and oral inflammatory parameters in individuals on the Mediterranean diet. The findings suggest that adherence to the Mediterranean diet can decrease serum omega-6 levels, which may have a favorable effect on gingival inflammatory parameters.

Nutrition Care Practices of Dietitians and Oral Health Professionals for Oral Health Conditions: A Scoping Review

Jessica R. L. Lieffers et al.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to identify and map the real-world nutrition care practices of oral health professionals and dietitians for optimizing oral health. Most articles provided self-reported data on OHP practices but lacked specific information on the care provided, while few studies examined the practices of dietitians. Barriers to nutrition care by OHPs were common, with limited information available on collaboration between dietitians and OHPs.

Systemic Antibiotics Influence Periodontal Parameters and Oral Microbiota, But Not Serological Markers

Elisa Kopra et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of systemic antibiotics is associated with oral microbiota composition and antibodies against periodontal pathogens, as well as negatively correlated with periodontal inflammation. Cephalosporins were the drug class most strongly associated with antibiotic use across all parameters. Additionally, antibiotics had an impact on the levels of Bacteroidetes and Spirochaetes phyla.

Summary: The study validated a self-reported questionnaire for differentiating periodontal health and various stages of periodontitis, showing moderate to high accuracy in identifying periodontal diseases and excellent performance in detecting Stages III/IV periodontitis when combined with demographic and lifestyle factors. Gingival bleeding on brushing as a sentinel sign of gingival inflammation: A diagnostic accuracy trial for the discrimination of periodontal health and disease

Ke Deng et al.

Summary: Self-reported gingival bleeding on brushing (GBoB) may have low sensitivity for discriminating periodontitis, but it shows promise for monitoring periodontal health and disease, as well as gingival inflammation. A haemoglobin concentration above 90.58 μg/ml or 0.51 μl blood volume enables visual detection of GBoB. Identification of GBoB may lead to earlier detection, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease.
