Electrochemistry enabled selective vicinal fluorosulfenylation and fluorosulfoxidation of alkenes

Yi Yu et al.

Summary: Both sulfur and fluorine play crucial roles in organic synthesis, the life science, and materials science. This study presents a highly selective electrochemical vicinal fluorosulfenylation and fluorosulfoxidation reactions of alkenes, made possible by the precise control of electrode potential. Preliminary mechanistic investigations reveal that the fluorosulfenylation reaction proceeds through a radical-polar crossover mechanism involving an episulfonium ion intermediate. Subsequent electrochemical oxidation easily converts fluorosulfides to fluorosulfoxides under higher applied potential in the presence of adventitious H2O.

Visible light-mediated polychlorination of alkenes via the dichloromethyl radical generated by chloroform and chlorides

Chunying Wu et al.

Summary: A new visible light-mediated protocol for polychlorination of alkenes has been reported using commercially available bulk chemicals, chloroform and chlorides. This method allows the introduction of multiple chlorine atoms into alkenes in a single step, providing the corresponding chloroalkanes in high yields under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, this transformation exhibits broad substrate scope, tolerating substituted olefins, chlorides, and pharmaceutical-derived olefins. Preliminary mechanism studies suggest the involvement of a radical-polar crossover mechanism as the primary pathway.

One-Pot Synthesis of Tertiary Amides from Organic Trichlorides through Oxygen Atom Incorporation from Air by Convergent Paired Electrolysis

Zhongli Luo et al.

Summary: A convergent paired electrolysis catalyzed by a B12 complex has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of tertiary amides from organic trichlorides. Various readily available organic trichlorides can be converted to amides in the presence of tertiary amines through oxygen incorporation from air at room temperature. The amide formation mechanism in the paired electrolysis, mediated by a cobalt complex, was proposed.

Electrochemical Borylation of Alkyl Halides: Fast, Scalable Access to Alkyl Boronic Esters

Bingbing Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a fast, scalable, and transition-metal-free borylation of alkyl halides enabled by electroreduction, providing efficient access to primary, secondary, and tertiary boronic esters. More than 70 examples, including the late-stage borylation of natural products and drug derivatives, demonstrate the broad utility and functional-group tolerance of this protocol. Mechanistic studies reveal the dual role of B(2)cat(2) as both a reagent and a cathodic mediator, facilitating the electroreduction of difficult-to-reduce alkyl bromides or chlorides at a low potential.
