Postoperative delirium and changes in the bloodebrain barrier, neuroinflammation, and cerebrospinal fluid lactate: a prospective cohort study

Jennifer Taylor et al.

Summary: This study found that changes in cerebrospinal fluid/plasma albumin ratio and plasma S100B during the perioperative period were associated with the severity of delirium. The breakdown of the blood-brain barrier was identified as a cause of postoperative delirium. Blood loss was also found to be related to the occurrence and severity of delirium.

Evaluation of systemic inflammation in response to remote ischemic preconditioning in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on systemic inflammation associated with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The results showed that systemic inflammation occurred in 66% of patients after TAVR, and RIPC did not reduce its incidence or improve patient survival associated with inflammation within 6 months.

Spinal Anesthesia with Targeted Sedation based on Bispectral Index Values Compared with General Anesthesia with Masked Bispectral Index Values to Reduce Delirium: The SHARP Randomized Controlled Trial

Charles H. Brown et al.

Summary: Reducing depth of anesthesia and anesthetic exposure does not reduce delirium after lumbar fusion surgery. Spinal anesthesia with targeted sedation based on BIS values is not superior to general anesthesia with masked BIS values in reducing delirium.

Perception of auditory stimuli during general anesthesia and its effects on patient outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Victor X. Fu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on implicit memory formation and unconscious auditory stimulus perception during general anesthesia. Results showed that intraoperative music significantly reduced postoperative pain and opioid requirements, indicating its beneficial effects on patient outcomes.

Incidence, Risk Factors and Impact on Long-Term Outcome of Postoperative Delirium After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Victor Mauri et al.

Summary: Postoperative delirium (POD) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has an incidence of 10.0% and is associated with higher EuroSCORE II, male sex, frailty, and various peri-procedural complications. Patients with POD experience longer hospital stay and higher in-hospital mortality.
