Contextuality without Incompatibility

John H. Selby et al.

Summary: Incompatible measurements are often seen as a characteristic of quantum theory that distinguishes it from classical worldviews. However, a more general notion of classicality is the existence of a generalized-noncontextual ontological model. This notion can imply constraints on the representation of outcomes even within a single nonprojective measurement. We demonstrate that measurement incompatibility is not necessary nor sufficient for proofs of the failure of generalized noncontextuality, and that every proof of the failure of generalized noncontextuality can be converted into a corresponding scenario without incompatible measurements.

Revealing quantum contextuality using a single measurement device

Jaskaran Singh et al.

Summary: In this paper, the concept of measurement noncontextuality (MNC) is analyzed and contextual scenarios involving sequential measurements of a single measurement device are identified. It is proven that any noncontextual ontological model fails to explain the statistics of outcomes of a single carefully constructed positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) executed sequentially on a quantum system. An inequality is derived from the noncontextual (NC) ontic model, and a quantum situation involving measurements from the Klyachko-Can-Binicioglu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality is constructed. It is shown that the statistics generated by this device violate the NC inequality.

Solvable Criterion for the Contextuality of any Prepare-and-Measure Scenario

Victor Gitton et al.

Summary: This study constructs an operationally noncontextual ontological model for quantum statistics in the prepare-and-measure scenario, covering the non-tomographically complete case and introducing the concept of unit separability. By formulating unit separability as a set of linear constraints, the study presents two hierarchies of algorithmic tests to witness or certify the classicality of a scenario. The results are discussed in the context of generalized probabilistic theories and implications for simplex-embeddability are addressed.

Uniqueness of Noncontextual Models for Stabilizer Subtheories

David Schmid et al.

Summary: This study provides a complete characterization of the (non)classicality of all stabilizer subtheories. It proves that there is a unique nonnegative and diagram-preserving quasiprobability representation of the stabilizer subtheory in all odd dimensions, known as Gross's discrete Wigner function. This representation is equivalent to Spekkens' epistemically restricted toy theory, establishing it as the unique noncontextual ontological model for the stabilizer subtheory. On the other hand, in all even dimensions, it is shown that there does not exist any nonnegative and diagram-preserving quasiprobability representation of the stabilizer subtheory, indicating its contextual nature.

Experimentally bounding deviations from quantum theory for a photonic three-level system using theory-agnostic tomography

Michael J. Grabowecky et al.

Summary: Researchers implemented GPT tomography on a three-level quantum system using the framework of generalized probabilistic theories (GPTs), allowing theory-agnostic analysis of experimental data. The analysis identified the most likely dimension of the GPT vector space describing the system to be nine, consistent with quantum theory predictions. Additionally, quantitative bounds on possible deviations from quantum theory were determined by identifying polytopes that bounded the state and effect spaces of the true GPT.

How dynamics constrains probabilities in general probabilistic theories

Thomas D. Galley et al.

Summary: The article introduces a general framework for analysing general probabilistic theories that emphasizes the distinction between the dynamical and probabilistic structures of a system. It shows that for transitive dynamical structures, probabilistic structures are rigid and correspond to spherical representations of the dynamical group. The methods are applied to classify all probabilistic structures when the dynamical structure involves complex Grassmann manifolds acted on by the unitary group.

Interference as an information-theoretic game

Sebastian Horvat et al.

Summary: The experiments demonstrate a clear distinction between classical, quantum, and higher-order theories, with interference order corresponding to parity order in games. Interference order is shown to be additive in both classical and quantum theory, serving as a device-independent witness of particle number in the quantum setting. Results suggest the operational significance of interference order and may be important in identifying information-theoretic principles in second-order interference within quantum theory.

ENTANGLEABILITY OF CONES

Guillaume Aubrun et al.

Summary: This research solves a long-standing conjecture by Barker, showing that the minimal and maximal tensor products of two finite-dimensional proper cones coincide if and only if one of the cones is generated by a linearly independent set. The proof techniques involve a combination of convex geometry, elementary algebraic topology, and computations inspired by quantum information theory. The motivation behind the study comes from foundational physics, demonstrating that any two non-classical systems modeled by general probabilistic theories can be entangled.

General Probabilistic Theories with a Gleason-type Theorem

Victoria J. Wright et al.

Summary: Gleason-type theorems allow for the recovery of quantum state space by consistently assigning probabilities to measurement outcomes and having a unique state for each assignment. The class of general probabilistic theories that adhere to Gleason-type theorems includes theories satisfying the no-restriction hypothesis and others that can simulate such theories effectively. The standard no-restriction hypothesis applied to effects is not equivalent to the dual no-restriction hypothesis applied to states, which is found to be less restrictive.

Emergence of Noncontextuality under Quantum Darwinism

Roberto D. Baldijao et al.

Summary: Quantum Darwinism suggests that the proliferation of redundant information is crucial for the emergence of objectivity from the quantum world. Research indicates that if the environment effectively encodes the proliferated information, classical objectivity can be unambiguously said to have emerged under quantum Darwinism.

Universal structure of objective states in all fundamental causal theories

Carlo Maria Scandolo et al.

Summary: The text discusses how objective and classical behavior emerges from a fundamental physical theory, providing a definition of decoherence applicable in all causal theories. Despite the diverse behavior of decoherence, it is shown that the spectrum broadcast structure characterizes objective states in every fundamental causal theory, similar to quantum mechanics. This highlights a stark contrast between the varied decoherence behavior and the universal features of objectivity.

Contextuality of General Probabilistic Theories

Farid Shahandeh

Summary: The concept of generalized contextuality studies the inability to explain measurement statistics using a context-independent probabilistic and ontological model, instead looking at frameworks such as general probabilistic theories (GPTs) to model these statistics. It is found that GPTs satisfying the no-restriction hypothesis are ontologically noncontextual only when they are simplicial, while GPTs violating this hypothesis can be considered as subtheories of GPTs satisfying the hypothesis. Subtheories are ontologically noncontextual if they are subtheories of simplicial GPTs of the same dimensionality.

Experimentally Bounding Deviations From Quantum Theory in the Landscape of Generalized Probabilistic Theories

Michael D. Mazurek et al.

Summary: Experiments in quantum foundations aim to differentiate between quantum theory and other alternatives, utilizing generalized probabilistic theories (GPTs) to analyze data and determine consistency. By testing various hypotheses for the dimension of GPT vector space, it is found that dimension 4 aligns with experimental data, providing quantitative bounds on deviations from quantum predictions. The study suggests that deviations beyond quantum state and effect spaces may only occur if future experiments require additional dimensions of GPT vector space beyond the four dimensions predicted by quantum theory.

Characterization of Noncontextuality in the Framework of Generalized Probabilistic Theories

David Schmid et al.

Summary: This study explores the notion of classicality in generalized probabilistic theory (GPT) and introduces the concept of simplex embeddability as a geometric condition for classicality in GPT. In essence, simplex embeddability requires the state space of a GPT to be embeddable in a simplex and its effect space in the dual of that simplex, providing a new intuitive and standalone notion of classicality for GPTs.
