Thermal properties of copper nanoparticles at different sintering stages governed by nanoscale heat transfer

Jihoon Jeong et al.

Summary: Using metal nanoparticles in Additive Manufacturing allows the fabrication of parts with sub-micrometer resolution. However, the thermal properties of metal nanoparticles are significantly different from their bulk counterparts due to nanoscale thermal transport effects. Estimating thermal properties based on bulk values can lead to large errors in AM applications. In this study, the thermal properties of 100 nm Cu nanoparticles were examined at different sintering stages. The results showed a significant decrease in thermal conductivity compared to the bulk value, highlighting the importance of accurate characterization of thermal properties in metal nanoparticles.

Micromechanical model of nanoparticle compaction and shock waves in metal powders

Alexander E. Mayer

Summary: The micromechanical model developed in this study can describe the deformation of metal powder under different compression states, including compression stage, percolation transition of pore system, and collapse stage of pores. By using molecular dynamics simulations, it was found that dislocation activity is the main driver of plastic deformation of metal nanoparticles during compaction, and the presence of twins was observed in copper and magnesium nanoparticles.
