Evaluation of traffic noise pollution using geographic information system and descriptive statistical method: a case study in Mashhad, Iran

Mohammad Gheibi et al.

Summary: The study focused on noise pollution in Mashhad, Iran, particularly around the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza. Findings showed that noise pollution is highest during the evening hours, with Tabarsi street having the most pollution and Imam Reza street having the least. Noise pollution was found to be most intense around residential and accommodation areas, which have the highest number of routes towards the Holy Shrine.

Traffic noise monitoring and modelling - an overview

Suman Mann et al.

Summary: Noise has become a major environmental problem, particularly road traffic noise. Researchers have developed several traffic noise prediction models, but further investigation is needed on important factors. Measurement of in-vehicle noise levels and comparison of tolerance levels among residents, road users, and commuters are necessary for better traffic noise regulation.

Spatio-temporal assessment of ambient air quality, their health effects and improvement during COVID-19 lockdown in one of the most polluted cities of India

Markandeya et al.

Summary: This study investigated seasonal variations in air pollution levels and the health impacts of major pollutants in Lucknow, as well as assessing the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on ambient air quality. The results showed significant reductions in PM2.5 levels during the lockdown, leading to improvements in air quality, while levels of SO2 did not show significant reduction. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between aerosol optical depth and Angstrom exponent.

Does real-time and perceived environmental exposure to air pollution and noise affect travel satisfaction? evidence from Beijing, China

Jing Ma et al.

Summary: The study found significant variations in travel satisfaction and co-exposure to real-time air pollution and noise among different transportation modes. Individuals using public transport experience higher levels of noise exposure and tend to have lower levels of travel satisfaction. While perceived air pollution and noise have direct impacts on travel experiences, the pathways between objective pollution and travel satisfaction differ for air pollution and noise.

Temporal and seasonal variations of noise pollution in urban zones: a case study in Pakistan

Sadaf Munir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal and seasonal variations of noise pollution in urban zones of Peshawar, Pakistan, finding differences in noise levels across different seasons and zones, with commercial areas exhibiting the highest noise levels. Traffic was identified as the main source of noise pollution in the area.

Variable and consistent traffic noise negatively affect the sleep behavior of a free-living songbird

Melissa L. Grunst et al.

Summary: Research has shown that anthropogenic noise can have strong effects on sleep in free-living animals, reducing sleep duration and causing sleep fragmentation. Understanding the differences in effects of different noise regimes and individual sensitivities to noise is important for evaluating the impact of noise exposure.

Associations of co-exposures to air pollution and noise with psychological stress in space and time: A case study in Beijing, China

Yinhua Tao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of co-exposures to air pollution and noise on psychological stress in different spatiotemporal contexts. Results indicate that individual mobility and the dynamics of environmental pollutants play a role in exposure effects.

A review of strategies for mitigating roadside air pollution in urban street canyons*

Yuhan Huang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the mechanisms controlling vehicle emission dispersion in urban street canyons and the strategies for managing roadside air pollution. Key factors influencing air pollution in street canyons include traffic conditions, canyon geometry, weather conditions, and chemical reactions. Mitigation strategies include traffic interventions and city planning, with the latter having a more significant impact on pollutant dispersion.

Increases in noise complaints during the COVID-19 lockdown in Spring 2020: A case study in Greater London, UK

Huan Tong et al.

Summary: The study found that noise complaints in London increased by 48% during the COVID-19 lockdown compared to Spring 2019, with significant increases in complaints about construction and neighbourhood noise. Urban factors, such as housing and demographic factors, played a more significant role in influencing noise complaints than actual noise exposure.
