Idiopathic epiretinal membrane: progression and timing of surgery

Summary: The primary idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) is a common finding, especially in the era of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Clinicians often face the dilemma of early versus delayed surgical intervention when managing iERM with macular pucker, especially in patients with good vision. This review aims to assist clinicians in understanding the natural history of iERM and making decisions to advise patients optimally.

The predictive value of ectopic inner retinal layer staging scheme for idiopathic epiretinal membrane: surgical results at 12 months

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of EIFL staging scheme, FAZ alterations, and other microstructural OCT findings on visual function in patients undergoing iERM surgery. The presence and thickness of EIFL were associated with worse visual acuity, while the presence of cystoid macular edema was also linked to poorer vision. FAZ area was significantly reduced in all ERM stages compared to fellow eyes, with statistically significant postoperative retinal sensitivity improvement seen only in Stage 1 and Stage 2.
