UV-visible broadband polarization-independent metamaterial absorber based on two-dimensional Au grating

Xinye Tian et al.

Summary: In this paper, a broadband metamaterial absorber (BMA) based on a thin metamaterial nanostructure composed of 2D Au square grating on graphene-SiO2 film and Au substrate is proposed and designed. The optimized structure achieves nearly perfect absorption in a broad range from deep UV light to visible light (100 nm-700 nm), exceeding 90% absorption. The mechanism responsible for the broadband absorption, including the excitation of Rayleigh anomaly (RA), cavity resonance (CR), surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and magnetic polaritons (MPs), has been analyzed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and the LC circuit model. The proposed BMA is also polarization and angle insensitive for incident light, even at large angles. It shows great potential in solar cell and photo-detector applications due to its simple geometry, ordinary metal-based material composition, and high performance in both bandwidth and absorptivity.

Terahertz narrowband perfect metasurface absorber based on micro-ring-shaped GaAs array for enhanced refractive index sensing

Yongzhi Cheng et al.

Summary: In this paper, a narrowband perfect metasurface absorber (MSA) based on a micro-ring-shaped GaAs array was proposed and theoretically investigated in the terahertz (THz) region for enhanced refractive index (RI) sensing. Simulation results showed that the proposed perfect MSA achieved an absorbance of 99.9% at 2.213 THz with a Q-factor of approximately 460.08, which was efficiently confirmed by the coupling mode theory (CMT). The perfect absorption of the designed structure was primarily contributed by the guided mode of critical resonance coupling. The absorption properties of the proposed structure could be adjusted by changing the geometrical parameters of the GaAs structure. The proposed MSA, due to its higher Q-factor, can enhance RI sensing applications with a sensitivity of about 1.45 THz/RIU. This research provides a new approach for constructing highly efficient MSAs with potential applications in sensing, detecting, and imaging in the THz region.

Summary: In this paper, a Janus metastructure (JMS) is proposed that can act both as a logic gate and detect multiple physical quantities. By adjusting the incident angle of electromagnetic waves, arranging the dielectrics asymmetrically, and using the anisotropy of the plasma, the Janus function can be obtained, which gives the metastructure a multiscale property. Good sensing performances are also owned, and the corresponding optimal sensitivities are 0.095 (2 pi c/d)/RIU, 9.42 x 10(-3) (2 pi c/d)/T, 1.48 x 10(-3) (2 pi c/d)/degrees, and 0.035 (2 pi c/d) m(3)/10(19), respectively. Compared with the traditional sensors, the proposed JMS equipped with two scales not only can realize the logic gate but also measure multiple physical quantities, which has a certain application potential.
