Characterizing carbon emissions from China V and China VI gasoline vehicles based on portable emission measurement systems

Xing-hang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study used the PEMS to reveal real-world emissions from two light-duty gasoline vehicles, and found that engine load and engine speed are the most dominant factors affecting vehicular carbon emissions under both China V and China VI standards. Additionally, the study showed that carbon emissions were significantly higher in urban areas compared to suburban areas.

Particulate matter exposure at urban traffic intersection during haze episodes: A case study in Changsha

Wei Pan et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to understand the determinants of traffic-related particulate matter (PM) variations and personal exposure to PMs at a viaduct-covered intersection controlled by traffic signals during winter haze episodes. The research found that the variability of PM concentrations could be largely explained by the built-up environment, traffic component, signal setting, and ventilation condition. The study suggests that an appropriate setting of traffic signals and ventilation conditions can help reduce personal exposure to PMs at urban intersections.

In-car particulate matter exposure across ten global cities

Prashant Kumar et al.

Summary: Cars are crucial for commuting worldwide, but they also significantly contribute to air pollution. Research on ten cities shows that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are highest when car windows are opened, followed by when fans are on and recirculation. Fine particles dominate air pollution during fan-on and recirculation conditions.

Spatiotemporal analysis of pedestrian exposure to submicron and coarse particulate matter on crosswalk at urban intersection

Zi-ye Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on pedestrian exposure to particulate matter on the crosswalk at urban intersections, finding higher particle concentrations on parking crosswalks and at a height of 1.5m compared to non-parking crosswalks and a height of 0.5m. Additionally, particulate concentration was nearly 6% higher on the crosswalk compared to the roadside. The study also revealed that pedestrian exposure to particulate matter was lower in trips with a 10s-20s delay after the onset of a walk signal.

Particulate matter exposure at a densely populated urban traffic intersection and crosswalk

Hong-di He et al.

Summary: This study investigates pedestrian exposure to PM pollution at an urban traffic intersection through fixed-site and mobile measurements, analyzing variations in particle sizes and exposure during different segments of a pedestrian's journey. The results highlight the importance of reducing PM pollution at intersections and provide valuable information for policymakers to consider measures to decrease pedestrian PM exposure.

Chemical characterization and source apportionment of PM1 and PM2.5 in Tianjin, China: Impacts of biomass burning and primary biogenic sources

Jahan Zeb Khan et al.

Summary: This study conducted chemical characterization and source apportionment of PM1 and PM2.5 in a suburban area near the urban-industrial port city of Tianjin, China. The main sources identified were secondary aerosols, biomass burning, traffic emission, and coal combustion.
