Validation of an algorithm for continuous monitoring of atrial fibrillation using a consumer smartwatch

Summary: This study validates a new algorithm using a commercially available smartwatch for continuous detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) and sinus rhythm in a free-living setting. The sensitivity and specificity of the smartwatch algorithm were found to be excellent, with confirmation using electrocardiogram (ECG) further enhancing specificity. The smartwatch algorithm also showed a strong correlation in quantifying AF burden compared to continuous ECG patch monitoring.
