In situ interface engineered Co/NC derived from ZIF-67 as an efficient electrocatalyst for nitrate reduction to ammonia

Hongfei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, cobalt nanoparticles decorated nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts were prepared by in situ interface engineering for the selective synthesis of ammonia. The catalyst exhibited remarkable performance and excellent cycle stability, achieving a high ammonia yield of 1352.5 lg h-1 mgcat-1 at-1.7 V vs Ag/AgCl, with a high ammonia selectivity of 98.2% and a maximum Faradic efficiency of 81.2% at-1.2 V vs Ag/AgCl. DFT calculation results suggested that the interfacial effect between cobalt nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon enhanced electron transfer and promoted the production of ammonia by lowering the adsorption and conversion free energy.

N-Coordinated Cu-Ni Dual-Single-Atom Catalyst for Highly Selective Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Yunlong Wang et al.

Summary: The traditional Haber-Bosch method for ammonia synthesis requires a large amount of energy, and an alternative method using electrocatalysis from nitrate has been proposed. However, understanding the structure-activity relationship is still challenging and requires in-depth experimental and theoretical research. A Cu-Ni dual-single-atom catalyst anchored in N-doped carbon (Cu/Ni-NC) with N-coordination is reported, showing competitive activity and a maximal NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 97.28%. Characterizations reveal that the high activity of Cu/Ni-NC is mainly attributed to the contribution of Cu-Ni dual active sites, including strong electron interaction, accelerated electron transfer, and effective suppression of undesired reactions.

Alloying of Cu with Ru Enabling the Relay Catalysis for Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Wensheng Gao et al.

Summary: The reduction of nitrate (NO3-) involving eight electron transfer process and multiple intermediates is a sluggish and inefficient reaction. To improve the efficiency, RuCu alloy catalysts supported on reduced graphene oxide (RuxCux/rGO) were synthesized. Among them, Ru1Cu10/rGO showed a high activity and selectivity in directly converting NO3- to NH3 with a rate of 0.38 mmol cm(-2) h(-1) and a Faradaic efficiency of 98% under a low potential of -0.05 V vs RHE. This efficient catalysis is attributed to the synergetic effect between Ru and Cu, in which Cu exhibits efficient activity for NO3- reduction to NO2- and Ru exhibits superior activity for NO2- reduction to NH3. Additionally, the doping of Ru into Cu tunes the d-band center of the alloy and modulates the adsorption energy of NO3- and NO2-, facilitating the direct reduction of NO3- to NH3. This study presents a new approach for the development of highly efficient multifunctional catalysts.
