Treatment effects in interactive fixed effects models with a small number of time periods?

Brantly Callaway et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the identification and estimation of the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT) in an interactive fixed effects model where untreated potential outcomes are affected by an unobserved time invariant variable. The models considered in this paper extend commonly used models in treatment effects literature and do not require an infinite number of time periods for consistent estimation of ATT. The main identification result relies on an invariant effect of a time invariant covariate, such as race or sex. The proposed approach shows that ATT can be identified with as few as three time periods and panel or repeated cross sections data.

Frontiers: Virus Shook the Streaming Star: Estimating the COVID-19 Impact on Music Consumption

Jaeung Sim et al.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 outbreak significantly reduced music streaming consumption in many countries, with countries experiencing larger decreases in mobility also seeing more notable downturns in streaming during the pandemic. The complementarity of music consumption to other activities could explain this mobility effect, which is likely transient rather than irreversible. Alternative mechanisms, such as unobservable Spotify-specific factors, did not explain the decline in music consumption.

Socio-economic factors affecting high infant and child mortality rates in selected African countries: does globalisation play any role?

Mohammad Mafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: The determinants of infant and child mortality in these countries include public health expenditure, numbers of physicians, globalization, economic development, education, good governance, and HIV prevalence rate. The study found that all these variables except the HIV prevalence rate negatively affect the infant and child mortality rates, while the HIV prevalence rate has a positive impact. Bidirectional and unidirectional causal relationships between the variables are also identified.

Music in Mood Regulation and Coping Orientations in Response to COVID-19 Lockdown Measures Within the United Kingdom

Noah Henry et al.

Summary: Music is used in daily life to regulate mood, with listeners engaging based on emotional responses and coping orientations. This study examined the influence of coping orientations and demographic variables on music's role in mood regulation during the UK lockdown due to COVID-19. Positive reframing, active coping, and substance use were found to be strong predictors of music use for mood regulation, while older age had a negative effect. Gender was not significant in relation to music use for mood regulation in this context.

Brantly Callaway et al.

Summary: This article discusses identification, estimation, and inference procedures for treatment effect parameters using the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) method, which is applicable to multiple time periods, variation in treatment timing, and when the parallel trends assumption holds potentially only after conditioning on observed covariates. The proposed methods allow for highlighting treatment effect heterogeneity across different dimensions and summarizing the overall effect of participating in the treatment.

Investigating gender fairness of recommendation algorithms in the music domain

Alessandro B. Melchiorre et al.

Summary: Research has shown that recommender systems may perform differently between user groups with various demographic characteristics, leading to unfairness. By introducing a concept of fairness and evaluating different collaborative filtering algorithms, the study aims to investigate the fairness of recommendation results towards specific gender groups. Significant discrepancies in performance between male and female user groups have been observed, and a resampling strategy has shown slight improvements in fairness measures without compromising accuracy.
