Reactions of nicotine and the hydroxyl radical in the environment: Theoretical insights into the mechanism, kinetics and products

Nguyen Thi Hoa et al.

Summary: Nicotine, a toxic tobacco alkaloid, was studied in its AOP with HO· radicals in aqueous and lipidic environments. The overall rate constant was found to be koverall = 106 1010 M-1 s-1, and the main reaction mechanism involved hydrogen transfer-single electron transfer pathways. The degradation of nicotine by HO· radicals increased with increasing pH levels in aqueous environments, suggesting that the oxidation products are less toxic than nicotine itself, especially at pH < 7.0.

Atmospheric degradation of 3-ethoxy-l-propanol by reactions with Cl, OH and NO3

Inmaculada Aranda et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigated the reactions of 3-ethoxy-1-propanol with Cl atoms, OH and NO3 radicals, measuring rate coefficients and identifying products. A reaction mechanism involving attack at the methylene group in the alpha-position to oxygen atoms was proposed. The tropospheric reactivity of 3-ethoxy-1-propanol was compared with other hydroxy ethers, and its atmospheric implications were assessed.
