Short-course antibiotics for common infections: what do we know and where do we go from here?

Rachael A. Lee et al.

Summary: Background: Over the past 25 years, research has shown that short-course antibiotic treatments are as effective as long-course treatments for common bacterial infections. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether clinical data supports the use of shorter antibiotic durations for 7 common infections. Content: The study found that, in most cases, short-course treatments were just as effective as long-course treatments, except for patients with bone and joint infections or those requiring surgical debridement.

Multidisciplinary team meetings in prosthetic joint infection management: A qualitative study

Jennifer Broom et al.

Summary: Multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTM) play multiple roles in the management of prosthetic joint infections, including achieving interdisciplinary balance, effective grey zone management, tailoring care, and recognizing failure. These functions are likely to lead to better care.

Why we prescribe antibiotics for too long in the hospital setting: a systematic scoping review

Robin M. E. Janssen et al.

Summary: This review examines the behavioral determinants that contribute to the prolongation of antibiotic therapy in daily hospital practice. The findings reveal that these determinants are largely related to individual healthcare professionals' knowledge, skills, and cognition, as well as their interactions. Additionally, certain determinants are identified that explain the variation in duration for different pathogens, diseases, and patient, professional, or hospital department characteristics.

Understanding decisions about antibiotic prescribing in ICU: an application of the Necessity Concerns Framework

Alyssa M. Pandolfo et al.

Summary: ICU clinicians' antibiotic decisions are influenced by their judgement of necessity for prescribing/not prescribing and their concerns about potential adverse consequences. Beliefs and perceptions strongly influence clinicians' views on antibiotic necessity, with clinicians often erring on the side of caution in uncertain situations.

Factors influencing the quality and functioning of oncological multidisciplinary team meetings: results of a systematic review

Janneke E. W. Walraven et al.

Summary: The quality of MDTMs is improved by scheduled, structured, prepared meetings attended by all core members, guided by a qualified chairperson and supported by an administrator. Streamlining of cases and patient centeredness contribute to correct diagnosis and decision making. Attendance at MDTMs leads to closer working relationships between physicians and provides some medico-legal protection.

Investigating infection management and antimicrobial stewardship in surgery: a qualitative study from India and South Africa

Sanjeev Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the barriers to effective infection management and antimicrobial stewardship across high-infection-risk surgical pathways in South Africa and India. It identifies the neglect of existing roles of healthcare professionals, particularly the ownership of decisions by operating surgeons, as a critical obstacle to integrated care. The study concludes that recognizing implicit HCP roles and implementing a framework approach involving nurse leadership and pharmacist empowerment are essential for optimized care.

Visual mapping of team dynamics and communication patterns on surgical ward rounds: an ethnographic study

Candice Bonaconsa et al.

Summary: The study found that team dynamics and communication patterns influence infection management and AMS behaviours in surgical teams. Different specialties have varying discussions on infection-related topics during ward rounds, with registrars and consultants dominating the discussions and limiting the input of other team members. Leadership styles also play a role in determining the active engagement of nurses and patients in discussions on infection management and antibiotic therapy.

Antimicrobial stewardship, therapeutic drug monitoring and infection management in the ICU: results from the international A- TEAMICU survey

Christian Lanckohr et al.

Summary: The survey revealed that many respondents in intensive care units have antimicrobial stewardship programs and use therapeutic drug monitoring and optimized administration of antibiotics. The availability of an antimicrobial stewardship program is associated with a higher utilization of therapeutic drug monitoring. It is recommended for intensivists to actively seek antimicrobial susceptibility reports and to monitor antimicrobial use.
