Reproducible and opposing gut microbiome signatures distinguish autoimmune diseases and cancers: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Md Zohorul Islam et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed gut microbiome signatures in cancers and autoimmune diseases, finding opposite trends at the microbial level. Certain bacterial genera enriched in cancer patients, such as Fusobacterium and Peptostreptococcus, were less common in autoimmune disease patients, while Bacteroides showed contrasting changes in both groups.

Gut Microbiota Characteristics of People with Obesity by Meta-Analysis of Existing Datasets

Jinhua Gong et al.

Summary: This study identified microbial markers associated with obesity through an integrated analysis of a large number of fecal samples. The results showed significant differences in bacterial communities between obese and control groups, and certain bacteria and metabolic pathways were associated with obesity. These findings provide important insights for the management of obesity.

Association between the Blautia/Bacteroides Ratio and Altered Body Mass Index after Bariatric Surgery

Yoonhong Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in gut microbiota before and after bariatric surgery and evaluates the association between gut microbial shift and altered body mass index (BMI). The results show that patients who underwent bariatric surgery had increased alpha-diversity, decreased Blautia, and increased Bacteriodes, and the Blautia/Bacteroides ratio was positively correlated with BMI.

Human gut microbiota in health and disease: Unveiling the relationship

Muhammad Afzaal et al.

Summary: The human gut contains a complex microbial community, which forms a connecting axis with other organs and plays a vital role in host-microbe interactions. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is linked to various human diseases. Understanding the role of gut microbiota in health and disease is crucial for maintaining health and treating diseases.

Diet-gut microbiota interactions on cardiovascular disease

Xufei Zhang et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The gut microbiota plays a vital role in CVD development and can be influenced by dietary nutrients. The crosstalk between diet and microbiota regulates CVD progression through various mechanisms, including endotoxemia, inflammation, gut barrier dysfunction, and lipid metabolism dysfunction. Microbial metabolites such as trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), secondary bile acids (BAs), short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) contribute to CVD pathogenesis. Dietary interventions targeting the gut microbiota may serve as novel strategies for CVD management.

Microbiota in health and diseases

Kaijian Hou et al.

Summary: The role of microbiota in health and disease is significant, contributing to homeostasis and immune regulation. Dysbiosis of microbiota can lead to disease progression, associated with dysregulation of community composition, modulation of host immune response, and induction of chronic inflammation. Clinical approaches utilizing microbiota, such as microbiota modulation and fecal microbial transplantation, can be effective for disease treatment.

Fecal Microbiota Transplant from Human to Mice Gives Insights into the Role of the Gut Microbiota in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Sebastian D. Burz et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the composition of gut microbiota plays a key role in the development of NAFLD, with mice transplanted with microbiota from a patient with fatty liver showing a higher susceptibility to obesity and steatosis compared to those transplanted with healthy microbiota. Metabolomic analyses revealed significant metabolic differences between mice with different microbiota compositions.

Sex differences in the phylum-level human gut microbiota composition

Alexander Koliada et al.

Summary: Sex-specific differences in the phylum-level intestinal microbiota composition were observed in the Ukraine population, with females having significantly increased relative abundances of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, while decreased Bacteroidetes compared to males. The Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio was significantly higher in females, with the difference being more pronounced in individuals aged 50 years and older. Further investigation is needed to understand the mechanistic basis for these sex-specific differences in gut microbiota composition and their potential role in the development of chronic diseases.

Sex- and Gender-Related Differences in Common Functional Gastroenterologic Disorders

Susrutha Puthanmadhom Narayanan et al.

Summary: Functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, are common in the United States, affecting about one in four individuals, with a higher prevalence in women. Sex-based differences in prevalence, symptom severity, and comorbid conditions are observed, suggesting biological disturbances and environmental factors may play a role in the pathophysiology. More research is needed to understand the contribution of sex and gender to the response to treatments for these conditions.
