A novel short fiber Bragg grating accelerometer based on a V-type dual mass block structure for low- and medium-frequency vibration measurements

Hoang-Dang Le et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel short fiber Bragg grating (FBG) accelerometer based on a dual mass block structure. The sensor is established on a solid, symmetrical design comprising a V-type beam. The FBG accelerometer configuration causes the FBG fiber to distort twice as much when subjected to external vibration. Theoretical research and optimization of the sensor's natural frequency and sensitivity are performed using MATLAB software, while static structural stress and modal simulation analysis are examined using ANSYS software. An experimental test is conducted to evaluate the sensor's implementation. The sensor has a natural frequency of 880 Hz, with a flat stability frequency response in the 20-340 Hz low-to-middle frequency range. The average sensitivity shows a linearity of approximately 66.95 pm/g, and the transverse anti-interference of the FBG fiber is around 6.53%. This work proposes a suitable method to observe low-and medium-frequency vibration signals in large-scale applications.

Recent Advances in Multidimensional Fiber Bragg Grating Accelerometers

Ruohui Wang et al.

Summary: Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) accelerometers measure vibrations through wavelength shifts caused by dynamic strain. Their high temperature resistance and multiplexing capabilities make them suitable for quasi-distributed applications in harsh environments. Improving the coupling efficiency in the sensor's mechanical structure can enhance the sensitivity of the FBG accelerometer. Additionally, the FBG accelerometer can be developed as a multidimensional sensor, which distinguishes it from distributed-fiber vibration-sensing technology. This paper reviews recent advances in FBG accelerometer developments, focusing on sensitivity enhancement and orientation identification. New techniques such as hybrid strain loading, thin-cladding fiber FBGs, multicore FBGs, and cladding FBGs are introduced.

Summary: In this study, a multi-degree-of-freedom series vibration model and transfer function were established based on the system dynamic equation, considering the influence of the adhesive layer and hinge structure on the dynamic response effect of the hinged FBG acceleration sensor. The results showed that the response time of the sensor could significantly lag when the elastic modulus of the adhesive layer is lower than a certain critical value. The hinge thickness was found to be the most crucial parameter affecting the dynamic response performance of the sensor.

Summary: This paper presents closed-form compliance equations for elliptic-revolute notch type multiple-axis flexure hinges undergoing small displacement in three-dimensional applications. Analytical compliance equations in six degrees of freedom are derived based on beam theory, with comparisons to existing compliance equations for revolute flexure hinges. Finite element analyses and numerical simulations verify the developed equations, establishing simplified coefficients between compliances of elliptic and circular-revolute flexure hinges. The presented compliance equations are helpful for designing spatial compliant mechanisms using elliptic-revolute flexure hinges.
