Water Activities of Acid Brine Lakes Approach the Limit for Life

Kathleen C. Benison et al.

Summary: The study investigates water activity for acid brines from Western Australia and Chile, which host diverse extremophilic microorganisms including archaea, bacteria, algae, and fungi. The water activity of the most extreme brine was considerably lower than that of saturated (pure) NaCl brine.
