Recent Developments in the Design and Fabrication of Electrochemical Biosensors Using Functional Materials and Molecules

K. Theyagarajan et al.

Summary: Electrochemical biosensors are advanced technologies used to detect biologically and environmentally significant analytes. Recent developments include imprinted and implantable biosensors as point-of-care devices that continuously monitor and alert users to anomalies. The stability and performance of these biosensors depend on the electrode material and platform used. Efforts have been made to design rational electrode materials and fabrication strategies to improve biosensor performance, resulting in the discovery of thousands of new biosensor platforms annually. This review aims to shed light on strategies and methodologies for the design and fabrication of electrochemical biosensors to enable sensitive and selective detection of analytes, while also highlighting the advantages of various electrode materials and the relationship between immobilized biomolecules and modified surfaces.

Metal-organic Framework in Pharmaceutical Drug Delivery

Sudipto Kundu et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are versatile materials with tuneable porosity and chemical composition, making them attractive for drug delivery applications. MOF-composites, created by incorporating guest materials, offer additional functionalities such as triggered drug release and improved pharmacokinetics. MOFs have also been employed in photodynamic treatment of cancer through the inclusion of photosensitizers. However, their use in electrochemical biosensing is limited due to weak conductivity and lack of modification sites. MOF-based composites, with functionalized nanoparticles, overcome these limitations and provide excellent electrical conductivity and catalytic activity.

Tuning the Properties of MOF-808 via Defect Engineering and Metal Nanoparticle Encapsulation

Rifan Hardian et al.

Summary: Defect engineering and metal encapsulation are valuable approaches to fine-tune the reactivity of metal-organic frameworks. This study quantified the reactivity of pristine, defective, and Pt encapsulated MOF-808, revealing competitive effects between crystal morphology and missing linker defects, which can impact the stability of the MOF. Despite leading to a loss in porosity, defects are beneficial for the stability of MOF-808 towards water and can be used to tune adsorption properties.
