Material Properties and Triggering Mechanisms of an Andesitic Lava Dome Collapse at Shiveluch Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, Revealed Using the Finite Element Method

Cory S. Wallace et al.

Summary: The study of the 1964 collapse of Shiveluch volcano involves numerical slope stability modeling to understand the triggering mechanisms, with earthquake loading identified as a potential cause and exploring the range of geomechanical properties. The findings allow for better forward modeling of potential future collapses and can be incorporated into regional hazard and risk assessments.

Hydrothermally induced edifice destabilisation: The mechanical behaviour of rock mass surrounding a shallow intrusion in andesitic lavas, Pinnacle Ridge, Ruapehu, New Zealand

S. P. Mordensky et al.

Summary: This study explores the deformation behavior of volcanic materials from seven geotechnical units associated with a small, shallow intrusion at Pinnacle Ridge, Ruapehu, New Zealand. The results show that the deformation behavior of volcanic rocks is largely influenced by porosity and hydrothermal alteration, which have significant implications for volcanic stability assessments. Finite element modeling demonstrates that even minor increases in pore pressure can change slope failure type, and the presence of low-permeability hydrothermal vein material can reduce slope stability.

Determining physical and mechanical volcanic rock properties via reflectance spectroscopy

Lauren N. Schaefer et al.

Summary: By utilizing mineralogical-physical-mechanical relationships, rock properties can be derived from rapid, non-invasive reflectance spectroscopy measurements, particularly suited for volcanic rocks. The correlations of various physical and mechanical properties of altered volcanic rocks with reflectance spectroscopy indicate the presence and degradation of iron-bearing minerals, allowing for estimation of rock properties directly from such measurements. Ultimately, the use of aerial or satellite imaging spectroscopy could enable the creation of geotechnical maps at the scale of volcanoes.

The mechanical behaviour and failure modes of volcanic rocks: a review

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mineralogy of volcanic rocks are diverse and complex, affecting their mechanical behavior. Parameters such as porosity, void space partitioning, pore and crystal size, and alteration, as well as external factors like water, strain rate, and temperature, all play a role in determining the uniaxial compressive strength of volcanic rocks. Through experimental data and analysis, differences between brittle and ductile mechanical behavior in volcanic rocks are highlighted, with discussions on factors like stress-strain curves, porosity evolution, and acoustic emission activity during deformation experiments. The study also touches upon the fracture toughness, mechanical properties, and failure modes of volcanic rocks, emphasizing the importance of understanding these aspects for monitoring volcanic hazards effectively.

Alteration-Induced Volcano Instability at La Soufriere de Guadeloupe (Eastern Caribbean)

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The study shows that hydrothermal alteration significantly increases volcano deformation and collapse volume, decreasing volcano stability and expediting volcano spreading, thus increasing the likelihood of mass wasting events and associated volcanic hazards. Monitoring hydrothermal alteration and its evolution at active volcanoes worldwide is therefore crucial.
