Radiotherapy-specific quality indicators at national level: How to make it happen

Aude Vaandering et al.

Summary: In order to promote best practice and quality of care, the Belgian College of Physicians for Radiotherapy Centers established a set of radiotherapy specific quality indicators for benchmarking on a national level. This paper describes the development, the collected QIs, the observed trends and the departments' evaluation of this initiative.

Adaptive Volumetric-Modulated Arc Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer: Evaluation of Benefit on Target Coverage and Sparing of Organs at Risk

Ciro Franzese et al.

Summary: Adaptive radiotherapy can help manage anatomical changes in head-neck cancer patients during radiotherapy and ensure adequate dose coverage and organ protection. This study investigated the effects of adaptive radiotherapy on patients treated with volumetric-modulated arc radiation therapy compared to simulated non-adaptive plans.

Variable and fixed costs in NHS radiotherapy; consequences for increasing hypo fractionation

Katie Spencer et al.

Summary: This paper estimated the cost of bone metastases radiotherapy using time-driven activity-based costing and analyzed the cost drivers and impact of reducing departmental activity on treatment costs. The study found that departmental activity was the biggest cost driver, while fixed and semi-fixed costs accounted for a significant portion of the treatment costs. The research concluded that hypofractionation provides a less burdensome and cost-efficient treatment option for patients within existing capacity, but the fixed nature of treatment costs complicates disinvestment.

Almost one year of COVID-19 pandemic: how radiotherapy centers have counteracted its impact on cancer treatment in Lombardy, Italy. CODRAL/AIRO-L study

Barbara Alicja Jereczek-Fossa et al.

Summary: Lombardy has become the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy and Europe. Despite focusing on treating COVID-19 patients, therapies for cancer patients, including radiotherapy, have continued with strict safety measures in place. Screening procedures and strict measures like triage, distancing, and PPE have helped limit the spread of infections, with early identification of cases through regular testing.

A potential revolution in cancer treatment: A topical review of FLASH radiotherapy

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: FLASH radiotherapy is a novel tumor treatment technique that delivers ultrahigh dose rate to the treatment area while sparing normal tissue. The underlying mechanism of FLASH effect is not fully understood, but it is hypothesized to involve oxygen depletion in normal tissue. Monte Carlo simulation plays a crucial role in understanding FLASH radiotherapy and more advanced simulation tools are being developed. This paper presents the history, current status, challenges, and prospects of FLASH radiotherapy.

Ultra-hypofractionated versus conventionally fractionated radiotherapy for prostate cancer (HYPO-RT-PC) : patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes of a randomised, controlled, 3 trial

Per Fransson et al.

Summary: The study compared conventional fractionated radiotherapy with ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy in localized prostate cancer patients, showing that ultra-hypofractionation had similar long-term patient-reported quality of life outcomes compared to conventional fractionation up to 6 years after treatment.
