Metal-Ligand Cooperativity Promotes Reversible Capture of Dilute CO2 as a Zn(II)-Methylcarbonate

Christine A. Phipps et al.

Summary: A series of thiosemicarbazonato-hydrazinatopyridine metal complexes were evaluated as CO2 capture agents, and the Zn(II) complexes showed effective CO2 capture from dilute sources with high efficiency. Ligand substitution and metal ion variation were found to affect the CO2 capture affinity, mainly associated with ligand basicity and metal ion Lewis acidity. The complexes demonstrated reversible CO2 capture and the equilibrium constants varied with different metals and ligands.

Porphyrins Acting as Photosensitizers in the Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Reaction

Yusuke Kuramochi et al.

Summary: The success of photocatalytic CO2 reduction using sunlight relies on the effective capture and utilization of visible light. Zinc porphyrins, synthetic analogues of chlorophyll and bacteriochlorophyll, have strong absorption bands in the visible region and are potential photosensitizers for CO2 reduction. However, their poor stability under photocatalytic reduction conditions has limited their use. By combining a metal complex catalyst with the porphyrin, we dramatically improve the durability of the porphyrin during the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction by preventing the accumulation of multiple electrons on the porphyrin. We provide a detailed description of the molecular design of systems that combine Re complexes and porphyrins, as well as their unique reaction mechanisms in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Mechanism of the photoreduction of carbon dioxide catalyzed by the benchmarking rhenium dimethylbipyridine complexes; operando measurements by XAFS and FT-IR

Yoki Kou et al.

Summary: The photoreduction of CO2 catalyzed by [fac-Re(dmbpy)(CO)(3)Cl] was precisely investigated using operando X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) and laser-flash FT-IR transient spectroscopy. The study observed the appearance of Re-0 species and a delayed rise of Re-II species in the early stage of the photoreaction. Additionally, the protonation process of forming Re-II was revealed as the rate determining step of the catalytic cycle.

Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Re(I) Photocatalysts with N-Heterocyclic Substituents

Andressa Muller et al.

Summary: The properties and reactivity of metal complex photocatalysts for solar-to-fuel conversion can be controlled by the molecular design of their ligands. In this study, rhenium(I) tricarbonyl polypyridyl compounds with different N-heterocyclic ligands were investigated as photocatalysts for reducing CO2 to CO. These complexes showed exceptional photocatalytic performance, with significantly increased TONCO values compared to the unsubstituted parental complex. The presence of N-heterocyclic substituents enhanced the visible-light absorption properties, favored the kinetics and thermodynamics of the photocatalysis, inhibited deactivation of the photocatalysts, and unlocked an alternative CO2 photoreduction pathway.

Porphyrins and phthalocyanines as biomimetic tools for photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction

Emmanouil Nikoloudakis et al.

Summary: The increasing energy demand and environmental issues call for renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Photocatalytic production of H-2 from water and conversion of CO2 into chemical fuels have been extensively studied. This review focuses on the recent advances in photocatalytic systems containing porphyrin or phthalocyanine derivatives for H-2 production and CO2 reduction. Various approaches for improving photosensitizing activity and catalytic performance are discussed, as well as the development of heterogeneous systems using nanostructures, organic frameworks, and semiconductor sensitization. The research in photocatalytic systems remains challenging due to limitations for large-scale application.

Summary: A novel dye-sensitized molecular photocathode for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in water has been developed, showing improved reactivity and durability with the incorporation of a polypyrrole network. The photocathode, when coupled with n-type semiconductor photoanodes, achieves a high faradaic efficiency in reducing CO2 to CO and HCOOH under visible light with the highest IPCE of 4.7%. This artificial Z-scheme photoelectrochemical cell demonstrates the highest energy conversion efficiency of 8.3 x 10(-2)% under dual visible light irradiation.
