Cancer statistics, 2022

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Summary: This meta-analysis revealed that the preoperative CONUT score is a potential independent predictor of the postoperative prognosis of RCC/UTUC patients. A high CONUT predicts worse overall survival, cancer-specific survival, disease-free survival, and recurrence-free survival in patients.

Prognostic Value of Pretreatment Controlling Nutritional Status Score for Patients With Pancreatic Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Xiaofeng Ma et al.

Summary: Our meta-analysis found that a high CONUT score is significantly associated with poor overall survival in patients with pancreatic cancer. However, it is not significantly associated with recurrence-free survival. There is also a significant association between a high CONUT score and male patients. However, there is no significant association between the CONUT score and clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, lymphatic vessel invasion, invasion of the portal vein system, and nerve plexus invasion in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

The Prognostic Value of Pretreatment Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index in Esophageal Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Jing Yu et al.

Summary: This study explores the prognostic role of the pretreatment geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) in patients with esophageal cancer. The results show that lower pretreatment GNRI is associated with poor overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with esophageal cancer.

Prognostic Value of Pretreatment Skeletal Muscle Mass Index in Esophageal Cancer Patients: A Meta-Analysis

Li Yao et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that lower pretreatment skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) is significantly associated with poorer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in esophageal cancer patients. Subgroup analysis based on treatment, tumor type, and cutoff value of SMI showed consistent results. These findings suggest that pretreatment SMI is an independent prognostic indicator for esophageal cancer patients.

Long-term variation in psoas muscle mass index is affected by short-term loss after esophagectomy in survivors of esophageal cancer

Erica Nishimura et al.

Summary: Changes in muscle mass may serve as an objective measure of quality of life after surgery, but the long-term effects of surgery on muscle mass without cachexia remain unclear. A study analyzed esophageal cancer patients who underwent esophagectomy and did not experience cancer recurrence for 3 years. The study found that a decrease in psoas muscle mass index (PMI) in the acute phase after surgery may contribute to a long-term decrease in PMI, potentially impacting the patients' quality of life. Intensive interventions may be beneficial for these patients to improve their long-term outcomes.

Prognostic Effect of the Controlling Nutritional Status Score in Patients With Esophageal Cancer Treated With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor

Lele Chang et al.

Summary: In recent years, studies have shown that immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) can improve the remission rate and prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer. This study found that the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score can independently predict the overall survival of patients with esophageal cancer, and a high CONUT score is associated with worse progression-free survival and overall survival.

Summary: Patients with breast cancer have a higher risk of developing lung cancer compared to the general population. Risk factors for developing subsequent lung cancer in breast cancer patients include smoking and radiotherapy, while chemotherapy, positive estrogen receptor status, and positive progesterone receptor status act as protective factors. Subgroup analysis suggests that radiotherapy only increases the risk of ipsilateral lung cancer in these patients.
