Vertical changes of PM2.5 driven by meteorology in the atmospheric boundary layer during a heavy air pollution event in central China

Xiaoyun Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the meteorological mechanism in the atmospheric boundary layer during a heavy air pollution event in Xiangyang, China. The study finds that regional PM2.5 transport from northern to central China is driven by northerly winds, and the ABL structures are unstable throughout the pollution event. Thermal and mechanical factors play important roles in the regional PM2.5 transport-induced air pollution over the receptor region. These findings contribute to our understanding of the ABL's influence on air pollution and the regional transport of air pollutants.

Atmospheric microplastics at a southern China metropolis: Occurrence, deposition flux, exposure risk and washout effect of rainfall

Zhen Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal distribution, characteristics, and exposure risk of atmospheric microplastics (AMPs) in Guangzhou, China. The abundance of AMPs in Guangzhou ranged from 0.01 to 0.44 items/m3, with higher abundance in the wet season. The study also found that rainfall effectively removes AMPs from the atmosphere, with light rain having a better washout effect.

Occurrence and human exposure risks of atmospheric microplastics: A review

Zhen Yuan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current state of knowledge about microplastic pollution in the atmosphere, discussing sample types and factors affecting transport and deposition. Microplastics have been found in various forms in the atmosphere worldwide, but their abundance varies across regions. Human activities and meteorological factors greatly influence the abundance of atmospheric microplastics, but the mechanisms underlying their transport and deposition processes remain unclear. Inhalation of atmospheric microplastics poses potential health risks, with different levels of intake for adults and children.

Summary: This study investigates the vertical profiles of black carbon in Shenzhen, China during the dry and wet seasons. The results show a weaker vertical gradient and better vertical mixing of black carbon in the wet season compared to the dry season. The influence of wind direction and speed on black carbon concentration depends on the season.

Atmospheric microplastics in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean: Distribution, source, and deposition

Jinfeng Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the marine air of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The results show that microplastics were abundant and diverse in shape and polymer type. The atmospheric microplastics were found to originate from both land and adjacent oceanic atmosphere, and their abundance and size varied with offshore distances. The findings highlight the importance of atmospheric microplastics as a source of marine microplastic pollution.

Summary: This study presents the first report on the occurrence and distribution of atmospheric microplastics in Mexico City. The results show that microplastics were detected in all samples, with higher concentrations in locations closer to industrial and urban centers. The dominant shape was fibers and the most common color was blue. The microplastics varied in length, with most being less than 500 μm. Metal contaminants were also detected on the microplastics.

Preferential transport of microplastics by wind

Joanna E. Bullard et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that wind transport is more effective in mobilizing microplastic particles compared to sand and soil. In wind erosion experiments, microplastic fibers were found to have lower enrichment compared to microbeads, with soil showing higher enrichment levels of microplastic fibers compared to sand, suggesting the need to carefully parameterize microplastic shape in models of atmospheric microplastic transport.
