Emissions of black carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Potential implications of cultural practices during the Covid-19 pandemic

Sudarshan Kurwadkar et al.

Summary: A comprehensive field investigation revealed the significant impact of the Diwali festival on the emissions of black carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, especially during the ongoing Covid pandemic. The first day of the festival witnessed large-scale releases of these compounds, while the remaining four days showed lower emissions.

A Comparative Study in Black Carbon Concentration and its Emission Sources in Tribal Area

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: In this study, the concentrations of black carbon (BC) measured using Aethalometer during different cooking periods in tribal villages of east India were assessed. The kitchen structure significantly influenced the accumulation of BC particles, with the highest BC pollutants emitted from paddy residue. The health risks were higher in certain types of kitchens.

Pre- and post-industrial levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (eastern Canada)

Anne Corminboeuf et al.

Summary: The study revealed varying concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, with higher levels in areas affected by anthropogenic activities. Source-diagnostic PAH ratios indicated a predominance of pyrogenic sources via atmospheric deposition. The PAH concentrations in the study areas suggest low ecological risks to organisms near the water-sediment interface.

Sudarshan Kurwadkar et al.

Summary: This study found the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and sediment samples from the Mahanadi River Basin, with a wide range of concentrations. The human health risk assessment showed low risk, while the ecological risk assessment indicated elevated adverse risk to aquatic species.

Horizontal and vertical segregation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Egyptian Mediterranean coast

Amr El-Maradny et al.

Summary: The Egyptian Mediterranean coast suffers from significant PAH pollution due to industrial exhausts, maritime activities, oil and gas production, and riverine inputs. The study found that the distribution of dissolved PAHs increases from west to east along the coast, with lower levels near the shore and higher levels in the middle and onshore stations. Microorganisms near the shore play a significant role in consuming PAHs, leading to higher concentrations further away from the shoreline. Deeper waters also have higher PAH concentrations, likely due to resuspension of sediment particles by wind-induced waves.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons volatilized from two polluted lagoons on Red Sea east coast: levels, sources, meteorological effects, and gas-particle partitioning

A. El-Maradny et al.

Summary: The study suggests that gasoline emissions and wind speed have significant impacts on the levels of PAHs in the atmosphere near polluted lagoons. Particulate PAHs contribute to less than 20% of the total atmospheric PAHs. Additionally, wastewater discharge in the lagoons increases PAH levels in the surrounding atmosphere.

PAH bioaccumulation in two polluted sites along the eastern coast of the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

A. El-Maradny et al.

Summary: The study found that sewage effluents have a significant impact on the bioaccumulation of PAHs in polluted sites along the coastal area of Jeddah city, with mangroves and benthic organisms being the main targets of accumulation. PAH levels were highest in the leaves, indicating accumulation both via translocation pathways and from the surrounding atmosphere. Although some sites showed high levels of PAHs, adverse biological effects are unlikely to occur based on sediment quality guidelines.

Health Risk Assessment, Composition, and Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Drinking Water of Southern Jharkhand, East India

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: Research on the occurrence, distribution, health risks, and composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in drinking water is limited in India and globally. This study in Southern Jharkhand found that groundwater samples in certain districts were more contaminated by PAHs, likely due to industrial activities and high vehicular density. The dominant sources of PAHs were identified as fuel combustion and coal, grass, and wood burning, with concentrations exceeding permissible limits in some areas, posing potential health risks from chronic exposure.

COVID-19 lockdowns reduce the Black carbon and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of the Asian atmosphere: source apportionment and health hazard evaluation

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: The government of India implemented multiple lockdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to significant reductions in air pollutants levels. Analysis showed that during the lockdown and unlock phases, concentrations of BC, PAHs, and PM2.5 were markedly lower, with different sources identified for these pollutants. The study also assessed health risks associated with BC exposure during the pandemic.
