Static and Dynamic Magnetic Properties of a Co(II)-Complex with N2O2 Donor Set - A Theoretical and Experimental Study

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: A representative Co(II) based single ion magnet (SIM) with N2O2 donor set and distorted pseudo-tetrahedral geometry has been synthesized and characterized. The atomic and electronic structure have been studied through DC magnetometry, ab-initio multi-reference CASSCF calculations, and qualitative ligand field theory. AC magnetometry has been used for the investigation of spin-lattice relaxation with temperature and magnetic field variations.

Magnetic Anisotropy and Relaxation of Pseudotetrahedral [N2O2] Bis-Chelate Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnets Controlled by Dihedral Twist Through Solvomorphism

Maximilian H. H. Pohle et al.

Summary: The methanol solvomorph of the cobalt(II) complex with a stericallly demanding Schiff-base ligand exhibits the largest dihedral twist distortion compared to an ideal pseudotetrahedral arrangement. The cobalt(II) ion in the solvomorph shows easy-axis anisotropy, increasing the spin-reversal barrier compared to the solvent-free complex. Additionally, a frequency-domain Fourier-transform THz-EPR study reveals the magnetic transition and spin-phonon coupling in the cobalt(II) complexes.

Understanding the unceasing evolution of Co(II) based single-ion magnets

Pradip Kumar Sahu et al.

Summary: Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecules that exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization and have potential applications in information storage and quantum computing. To make them practical, high blocking temperature and effective energy for magnetization reversal are required. Enhancing magnetic anisotropy can reduce quantum tunneling of magnetization. Among transition metal ions, Co(II) is a superior choice for designing single-ion magnets.

The Impact of Ligand Field Symmetry on Molecular Qubit Coherence

Nathanael P. Kazmierczak et al.

Summary: This study develops a model for predicting T-1 relaxation times in transition metal complexes, using group theory selection rules governing vibrational symmetries inducing decoherence. The thermal weighting of coupling terms provides surprisingly accurate predictions of experimental T-1 trends and explains previously confusing features in spin-lattice relaxation data. The methodology elucidates specific vibrational modes causing decoherence and offers insights into the origin of room temperature coherence in transition metal complexes.

Deconvolving Contributions to Decoherence in Molecular Electron Spin Qubits: A Dynamic Ligand Field Approach

Ruben Mirzoyan et al.

Summary: Transition metal complexes have become prominent candidates for quantum bit applications in the past decade due to their tunability and long coherence times. However, decoherence limits their use in quantum information technologies. Recent developments have proposed various chemical design principles to extend coherence in molecular transition metal qubits, outlining different decoherence regimes and design principles for each. Dynamic ligand field models can provide insights into the intramolecular vibrational contributions in the spin-phonon decoherence regime. This minireview aims to inform the development of molecular quantum technologies tailored for different environments and conditions.

Optimal N-Co-N bite angle for enhancing the magnetic anisotropy of zero-field Co(II) single-ion magnets in tetrahedral [N4] coordination environment

Miao Wang et al.

Summary: By synthesizing a mononuclear tetrahedral Co(II) complex, this study demonstrates the method of modulating the coordination environment by varying substitution on the ligand. Magnetic studies reveal that the acute N-Co-N bite angle can influence the magnetic anisotropy of tetrahedral Co(II) complexes.

Origin of the anomalously low Raman exponents in single molecule magnets

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: This study systematically examines the origins of different abnormalities in the Raman exponents of single molecular magnetic relaxation, clarifying past misunderstandings and the appropriateness of fitting procedures. It is found that exponential laws raised by optical phonons can yield spurious power laws with low exponents, indicating long-standing misunderstandings of the origins of low Raman exponents. The presence of these exponents suggests the importance of the local dynamical environment for magnetic relaxation in this regime, resulting from spin-lattice coupling with optical modes.
