Global assessment of oil and gas methane ultra-emitters

T. Lauvaux et al.

Summary: Methane emissions from oil and gas production and transmission significantly contribute to climate change, with ultra-emitters being the primary source. Reducing emissions from ultra-emitters can lead to substantial economic benefits at a low cost.

Tracking CO2 emission reductions from space: A case study at Europe's largest fossil fuel power plant

Ray Nassar et al.

Summary: This study quantified CO2 emissions from Europe's largest fossil fuel power plant using NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 and 3 missions, demonstrating the ability of space-based observations to monitor emission reductions from large facilities. The results are informative for understanding the potential limitations and capabilities of future satellites in supporting CO2 emission reduction monitoring efforts.

Analyzing Local Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide Emissions From Space Using the Divergence Method: An Application to the Synthetic SMARTCARB Dataset

Janne Hakkarainen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method to derive CO2 and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from cities and power plants using CO2M satellite observations. The divergence method, along with different denoising techniques, is applied to highlight the anthropogenic enhancements and estimate the emissions. The results show that the divergence method is a promising tool for estimating CO2 emissions.

Automated detection of atmospheric NO2 plumes from satellite data: a tool to help infer anthropogenic combustion emissions

Douglas P. Finch et al.

Summary: The study employs a CNN to identify NO2 plumes from satellite data with a success rate of over 90%. Most NO2 plumes are found over mainland China, but there is no correlation with the location of natural gas flaring. Using a CO2 emission inventory, it is determined that the NO2 plume distribution captures 92% of total CO2 emissions.

Sensitivity to the sources of uncertainties in the modeling of atmospheric CO2 concentration within and in the vicinity of Paris

Jinghui Lian et al.

Summary: The study revealed limitations of the top-down atmospheric inversion method in quantifying CO2 emissions from cities, with significant nighttime model-data misfits identified particularly in the Paris area. Uncertainties in the diurnal profile of anthropogenic emissions and errors in vertical mixing near the surface in the WRF-Chem model were highlighted as critical sources of errors. Additionally, differences in simulated CO2 induced by different boundary conditions were shown to be as much as 5 ppm, suggesting the need for improved modeling approaches to enhance accuracy in CO2 emission estimates.
