Climate Change Impacts on Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

Steven J. Bograd et al.

Summary: Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUSs) play a crucial role in global ocean productivity and ecosystem services. This paper reviews the impact of climate change on EBUSs, including changes in physics, biogeochemistry, and ecology, and presents observations and projections for the future. While there are commonalities in historical and projected change, such as intensification of upwelling in poleward regions, mitigated warming in near-coastal regions, and increased water-column stratification, there are still uncertainties regarding how these changes will affect productivity and ecosystem structure. Further research is needed to address these uncertainties and better understand and adapt to climate-driven changes in EBUSs.

Global Phylogeography of Marine Synechococcus in Coastal Areas Reveals Strong Community Shifts

Hugo Dore et al.

Summary: This study uses global metagenomic data to describe the taxonomic composition of coastal Synechococcus communities worldwide, revealing significant community shifts, particularly along European coasts. The study also characterizes the thermal preferenda of major Synechococcus clades, providing new insights into their adaptation to temperature.

Nanomolar phosphate supply and its recycling drive net community production in the subtropical North Pacific

Fuminori Hashihama et al.

Summary: The seasonal drawdown of dissolved inorganic carbon in the subtropical upper ocean contributes significantly to net community production globally. While surface macronutrients are chronically depleted, nanomolar increases in surface nitrate plus nitrite and phosphate from summer to winter in the western subtropical North Pacific are found to be in near-stoichiometric balance with microbial C:N:P ratios. These findings suggest that the nanomolar upward supply of phosphorus and its preferential recycling play a vital role in sustaining net community production in oligotrophic ocean environments.
