Sustainable carbon nano-onions as an adsorbent for the efficient removal of oxo-anions

Poonam Kumari et al.

Summary: The increasing threats of oxo-anions in drinking water have prompted the development of cost-effective and sustainable nanomaterials for water remediation. Carbon nano-onions derived from flaxseed oil have been found to be efficient adsorbents for toxic oxo-anions removal, with high adsorption efficiency and recyclability. They show promise for practical water remediation applications.

Nehal H. Rathod et al.

Summary: Water treatment and waste acid reclamation are important due to industrialization. Researchers have shown interest in ion exchange membranes based electrodialysis (ED) and diffusion dialysis (DD) due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Acid reclamation by diffusion dialysis has gained attention for its selectivity and energy efficiency. In this study, an efficient anion exchange membrane (AEM) was synthesized using a free radical co-polymerization method. The synthesized membranes showed promising properties for salt removal and acid recovery.

Biomass-derived carbon nano-onions for the effective elimination of organic pollutants and oils from water

Poonam Kumari et al.

Summary: In this study, biomass-derived carbon nano-onions (CNOs) were explored for the first time as adsorbents for organic pollutants and oils in water. The as-synthesized CNOs showed high adsorption efficiency in removing organic solvents and oils without any surface modification. The CNOs can be reused for more than 5 cycles by simple evaporation. Therefore, CNOs have promising potential for the treatment of oil-polluted water.

Decarbonized and circular brine management/valorization for water & valuable resource recovery via minimal/zero liquid discharge (MLD/ZLD) strategies

Argyris Panagopoulos et al.

Summary: Brine from desalination, salt lakes, and industrial activities has received global attention due to its negative impact on the environment. Current disposal methods are unsustainable, and thus brine treatment and valorization is considered a promising strategy to eliminate discharge and recover valuable resources. While traditional technologies have limitations, novel technologies such as forward osmosis and membrane distillation show promise in treating high salinity brine. Extracting major ions and scarce metals from brine is technically feasible and offers economic opportunities. To make brine treatment systems more eco-friendly, renewable energy sources should be integrated. In addition to water, minerals, salts, metals, and energy can be harvested from brine, including salinity gradient power. Further research and development efforts are needed to promote brine valorization and resource recovery for a CO2-free and circular global economy.
