Wall shear stress and wall heat flux in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer

Fulin Tong et al.

Summary: The study reports the characteristics of wall shear stress and wall heat flux in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer using direct numerical simulation, with an analysis of statistical data and a detailed conditional analysis on extreme fluctuation events. The results show a different mechanism for the generation of extreme positive and negative events in wall heat flux compared to wall shear stress.

Skin-friction and heat-transfer decompositions in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The analysis of the decompositions of the skin-friction and heat-transfer coefficients in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers reveals that the overshoot phenomena in wall skin friction and heat transfer are mainly caused by the change in mean velocity profiles and the viscous dissipation, respectively. These observations differ from previous findings that attribute the overshoot to the Reynolds shear stress and Reynolds heat flux. Additionally, it is observed that the strongly cooled wall temperature and high Mach number can slightly affect the contribution of the Reynolds shear stress and weaken the contribution of mean convection due to compressibility effects. Moreover, the relative contributions of mean convection, pressure dilatation, viscous dissipation, and the Reynolds heat flux increase with wall temperature.

Drag reduction in wall-bounded turbulence by synthetic jet sheets

Feng Xie et al.

Summary: A turbulent drag-reduction method utilizing synthetic jet sheets was investigated through direct numerical simulations. By adjusting the angle and height of the jet sheets, a drag reduction of 10% to 30% was achieved. The study also found that the global skin-friction drag reduction was a result of a finite counter flow induced by the interaction between the jet-sheet flow and the main flow.

Effect of chemical reaction on mixing transition and turbulent statistics of cylindrical Richtmyer-Meshkov instability

Zheng Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of chemical reactions on the statistical characteristics of transition and turbulent mixing in a three-dimensional cylindrical Richtmyer-Meshkov instability through direct numerical simulations. The results show that chemical reactions can accelerate the growth of the mixing width, but weaken turbulent mixing within the mixing regions. Additionally, small-scale structures and helicity begin to develop after reshock.

Skin-friction drag reduction by local porous uniform blowing in spatially developing compressible turbulent boundary layers

Rui Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of local porous uniform blowing on the reduction of skin-friction drag in spatially developing compressible turbulent boundary layers through direct numerical simulations. The uniform blowing leads to a significant decrease in skin-friction drag and promotes the formation of turbulent structures and the energy cascade process.

Coherent near-wall structures and drag reduction by spanwise forcing

Emanuele Gallorini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of streamwise-traveling waves of spanwise wall velocity (StTW) on the quasistreamwise vortices (QSV) in the near-wall region of turbulent channels. The study finds that StTW significantly impact the wall-normal distribution of the vortex population and that the contributions of QSV to the quadrant Reynolds shear stresses change significantly during the control cycle.

Effect of wall temperature on the kinetic energy transfer in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that a cold wall temperature can enhance the local reverse transfer of kinetic energy and suppress the local direct transfer. The average filtered spatial convection and average filtered viscous dissipation dominate near the wall, while the average subgrid-scale flux of kinetic energy peaks in the buffer layer. Helmholtz decomposition reveals a strong transfer of the solenoidal component of fluctuating kinetic energy in the buffer layer and a significant transfer of the dilatational component in the near-wall region.

Decomposition of the mean friction drag on an NACA4412 airfoil under uniform blowing/suction

Yitong Fan et al.

Summary: The study on the use of blowing and suction control strategies in wall-bounded turbulence shows that blowing enhances the contribution of large-scale motions and suppresses that of small scales, while suction behaves contrarily. However, the contributions related to cross-scale interactions remain almost unchanged with different control strategies.

Direct numerical simulations of supersonic turbulent boundary layer with streamwise-striped wall blowing

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: Direct numerical simulations were conducted on a spatially developing Ma 2.25 supersonic turbulent boundary layer with streamwise-striped wall blowing for turbulence drag reduction. It was found that despite weak control amplitudes, SSB can result in drag reduction effects. Analysis using compressible Renard-Deck decomposition revealed that the spatial growth term is mainly responsible for turbulence drag reduction.

An energy-efficient pathway to turbulent drag reduction

Ivan Marusic et al.

Summary: Skin-friction drag can be decreased by oscillatory motion in the surface at high Reynolds numbers, with two distinct pathways for drag reduction identified: one involving frequencies comparable to small-scale eddies and the other involving frequencies comparable to large-scale eddies. The second pathway offers more efficient drag reduction at higher Reynolds numbers, presenting new opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and increasing power generation.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted on controlling a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) on a flat plate using plasma actuators, resulting in a drag reduction of up to 26%. The study found that the drag reduction phenomenon persists downstream, with three distinct spatial regions characterized by drag increase, pronounced drag reduction, and drag recovery, all related to large-scale streamwise vortices.

Drag reduction in turbulent channel flows by a spanwise traveling wave of wall blowing and suction

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: By applying a spanwise traveling wave generated by blowing and suction at walls, drag reduction in fully developed turbulent channel flow can be achieved. The drag reduction mechanism is strongly related to pressure-strain correlations, with reduced wall-normal strain rate and pressure-strain correlation being the main causes.
