Full-scale experiment for segmental linings of deep-buried shield tunnels bearing high inner water pressure: Comparison of mechanical behaviors of continuous- and stagger-jointed structures

Long Zhou et al.

Summary: Full-scale loading tests were conducted on shield segmental linings subjected to high earth pressure and high inner water pressure to investigate the effects of inner water load and assembly manner on the mechanical properties of the linings. The results show that deep-buried segmental linings without inner pressure have a high safety reserve, but the deformation of the linings increases and safety reserve decreases under high inner water pressure. Stagger-jointed assembly reduces convergence deformation, openings of segmental joints, and bolt strains, but compromises the water-proofing safety of circumferential joints.

Study of the long-term behavior of segmented tunnels in cohesive soil based on the circumferential joint opening

Alireza Afshani et al.

Summary: This study proposes a model to investigate the long-term behavior of aging tunnels in cohesive soils. The model takes into account the circumferential joint opening and drainage conditions of the tunnel lining. By using coupled soil-water numerical analyses, the model accurately estimates the deformation, load development, and water pressure generation and dissipation in the tunnel over the long term.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of new tunnelling on existing tunnels using a centrifuge model test. The results show that the soil pressures and bending movements of the existing tunnels behave differently due to the new tunnel excavation. The joint deformation of the existing tunnels can be classified into translation, rotation, or a combination of both.

Experimental investigation on waterproofing performance of segmental joint with double gaskets for shield tunnel

Wenqi Ding et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental investigations on the waterproofing performance of segmental joints with different settings of double gaskets. The results show that the gasket with higher waterproofing capacity dominates the overall performance, and the waterproofing capacity decreases with the increase of joint opening. Four stages of failure pattern are identified.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: The study used centrifuge model tests to investigate the effects of new tunneling on existing tunnels, including surface settlements, soil pressures, bending movements, and joint behaviors. The results showed that the volume loss from new tunnel excavation was smaller than the soil volume moving into the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the segmental lining model was larger than that of the composite lining model. Additionally, the soil pressures on different positions of the existing tunnel behaved differently, and the bending movements of the existing tunnels decreased due to new tunnel excavation.
