Post-weaning management of modern dairy cattle genetics for beef production: a review

Summary: Over the past decade, the feeding and management of dairy steers for beef production in the U.S. has gained more attention. Dairy steers are less efficient at producing beef compared to steers from beef breeds. To improve beef production from the dairy herd, growth-promoting technologies and beef x dairy crossbreeding are being implemented in dairy operations. The contribution of dairy steers to the U.S. fed beef supply has increased significantly over the last two decades due to declining beef cow numbers and the increased use of sexed dairy semen. However, dairy steers have lower dressing percentages and yield less red meat compared to beef steers due to various factors.

Summary: Improved reproductive management has optimized dairy cow pregnancies for beef production. A study was conducted to compare the feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of straightbred beef calves raised in a calf ranch with beef x dairy crossbreds and straightbred beef cattle raised in a traditional beef cow/calf system. Despite differences in dam breed, straightbred beef cattle had similar performance, while Jersey maternal genetics resulted in more efficient feedlot and carcass performance than A x J crossbreds.

Crossbreeding beef sires to dairy cows: cow, feedlot, and carcass performance

Summary: Genetic and reproductive advancements, volatile milk markets, and beef packer restrictions have led to increased popularity of crossbreeding beef sires with dairy cows in the United States. This study aimed to understand the performance of dairy cows bred to beef sires and the feedlot and carcass performance of crossbred beef x dairy cattle. The results showed that the lactation performance of cows was minimally impacted by the sire type of previous conception. Crossbred beef x dairy cattle exhibited similar weight gain at the feedlot but lower dressing percentage than beef cattle. The beef x dairy carcasses had lower fat thickness and larger ribeye area than beef cattle. Additionally, beef cattle produced a higher percentage of yield grade 4 carcasses compared to beef x dairy and Holstein cattle.
