The Metamorphosis. The impact of a young family member's problematic substance use on family life: a meta-ethnography

Summary: This meta-ethnography aims to explore the impact of a young family member's problematic substance use on family life. Through systematic literature searches and meta-ethnography, it was found that PSU leads to comprehensive changes in family life, leaving family members feeling powerless and helpless. Family-oriented help should be readily available to address these challenges.

Keeping the balance. The efforts of bereaved siblings prior to their brothers' or sisters' drug-related death

Summary: This study aims to explore the burdens experienced by siblings prior to their siblings' deaths. Qualitative interviews were conducted to examine the efforts made by bereaved siblings while their siblings were struggling with substance abuse. The findings identified three tasks undertaken by the siblings: emotional support, social inclusion, and practical assistance. The study also discusses these findings in relation to the concept of homoeostasis, which refers to the role of family rules in maintaining stability.

Does 'Time Heal all Wounds?' The Prevalence and Predictors of Prolonged Grief Among Drug-Death Bereaved Family Members: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: This study investigated the consequences of drug-related deaths for bereaved family members and found that 26% of them experienced symptoms of prolonged grief. The strongest associations were found between high symptom levels and factors such as time since the loss, suicidal thoughts, and withdrawal from others. Additionally, symptom levels did not decrease over time for those who lost a family member one to two years ago.

Substance use disorder: a model of atmosphere within families living with SUD
