NADPH Oxidase 3 Deficiency Protects From Noise-Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Francis Rousset et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the active role of NOX3 in the pathophysiology of noise-induced hearing loss and the absence of functional NOX3 enhances the hearing recovery phase following noise trauma. This opens an interesting clinical window for pharmacological or molecular intervention aiming at post prevention of noise-induced hearing loss.

A Case Study about Joining Databases for the Assessment of Exposures to Noise and Ototoxic Substances in Occupational Settings

Frederic Clerc et al.

Summary: Evaluating the risks associated with multiple occupational exposures is challenging, as current databases often do not integrate medical and exposure information or consider the adverse effects of co-exposures. This study explores the use of different existing databases to assess the health effects of multiple exposures. Analysis of three French databases reveals that certain occupational sectors have a higher proportion of exposed workers, but co-exposure does not appear to increase the incidence of hearing loss.

Coexposure to Solvents and Noise as a Risk Factor for Hearing Loss in Agricultural Workers

Alexandra A. Farfalla et al.

Summary: This study examined the correlation between hearing loss and coexposure to solvents and noise among farmers and ranchers in central United States. The findings suggest that nearly 60% of individuals exposed to both solvents and noise experienced hearing loss. The study also found that coexposure to solvents and noise significantly increased the likelihood of moderate/severe hearing loss.

Glucose Protects Cochlear Hair Cells Against Oxidative Stress and Attenuates Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Mice

Hao Xiong et al.

Summary: The study shows that glucose supplementation can reduce the formation of reactive oxygen species induced by oxidative stress, thereby protecting cochlear hair cells and reducing NIHL. Glucose supplementation increases ATP and NADPH levels, reduces H2O2-induced ROS production and cytotoxicity. Pharmacological inhibition of glucose transporter type 1 activity eliminates the protective effects of glucose against oxidative stress.

Dose-Dependent Pattern of Cochlear Synaptic Degeneration in C57BL/6J Mice Induced by Repeated Noise Exposure

Minfei Qian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dose-response mechanism of prolonged noise-induced audiological dysfunction and cochlear synaptic degeneration through repeated exposures to various intensities of noise. Moderate-intensity noise exposures were found to cause damage to inner hair cell ribbon synapses and impaired MOC efferent synapses, while high-intensity noise exposures primarily induced PTS and damages on cochlear amplifier function. The study also reveals a frequency-dependent vulnerability of the repeated noise-induced cochlear synaptic degeneration.
