Mechanical properties of interlayer hybrid textile composite materials based on modified aramid and UHMWPE fabrics

Cuiyu Li et al.

Summary: Aramid fibers and UHMWPE fibers were modified by growing zinc oxide nanorods on the aramid fiber surface and treating UHMWPE fibers with oxygen plasma and a silane coupling agent. The study investigated the effects of surface modification on the morphology, composition, and mechanical properties of the fibers and composites. The results showed that surface roughness, active surface functional groups, and wettability were crucial for improving interface adhesion, and the interlayer hybridization pattern had a significant impact on the mechanical behavior of the hybrid textile composites.

Hybrid effects and interactive failure mechanisms of hybrid fiber composites under flexural loading: Carbon/Kevlar, carbon/glass, carbon/glass/Kevlar

Hongyong Jiang et al.

Summary: Regulatable and customized mechanical properties of aeronautical composites can be obtained with fiber hybridization, but the challenging hybridization design is due to complex effects. This study reveals the hybrid effects and failure mechanisms of carbon-glass-Kevlar hybrid fiber reinforced polymer composites under flexural loading. Different hybridizations are proposed and flexural tests are conducted to evaluate the properties. Microscopic characterization demonstrates the improvements in properties and the interaction effects of hybrid ratio and dispersity. Numerical simulations further confirm the mechanical behaviors of the composites.

Investigation on low-velocity impact and interfacial bonding properties of weft-knitted UHMWPE reinforced composites

Ruosi Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low-velocity impact and interfacial bonding properties of weft-knitted ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) filaments reinforced epoxy resin and vinyl ester resin composites. It was revealed that the composites with interlock air space stitch reinforcement exhibited the highest mechanical properties and puncture resistance. The tensile and flexural properties of the epoxy matrix composites were better than vinyl ester matrix composites, but their low-velocity impact resistance was slightly inferior. The interfacial bonding ability between vinyl ester resin and weft knitting structure reinforcement was stronger.

Comparison of Static/Dynamic Loading and Tensile Behavior of Interply and Intraply Hybridized Carbon/Basalt Epoxy Composites

Hafiz Muhammad Numan Zafar et al.

Summary: By hybridizing inherently brittle carbon fibers with basalt fibers in fiber reinforced plastics, impact damage resistance and ductility are improved. This study investigates the effects of two hybridization types on mechanical behavior and damage resistance of carbon/basalt hybrid composites. Results show that interplay hybrids have better damage absorption, while intraply hybrids have higher tensile strength and percent elongation due to better interlayer cohesion and failure modes in the carbon yarns, respectively.

Glass/polypropylene hybrid knitted fabrics for toughening of thermoset composites

Emine Uzumcu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of weft knitted fabric reinforced thermoset composites containing glass/polypropylene (PP) hybrid yarns. The addition of PP yarns decreases the overall density of composites and enhances the ductility of the knitted fabrics. However, it decreases the flexural strength of composites while improving the specific flexural strength. The impact and CAI tests show that adding PP yarns enhances the impact and damage tolerance of composites.

Effect of Weaving Pattern on the Mechanical Properties of 2D Interwoven Kevlar-Jute Hybrid Laminates

Narayana Dilip Raja et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties of hybrid laminates with different weaving patterns. It was found that the plain weave and basket weave patterns resulted in evenly distributed matrix element pockets, which facilitated load distribution. The twill weave pattern exhibited enhanced mechanical properties and elasticity, while the satin weave pattern showed microcracks within the matrix. The twill weave pattern demonstrated anisotropic load transfer, leading to superior tensile, flexural, compressive, and impact strengths.
